THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2004. PAGE 27 Entertainment Leisure Memories of Christmas at Memorial Hall By Elyse DeBruyn Citizen staff Recreate those childhood memories through the toe-tapping, fun-loving music of a Don Messer tribute performance. On Dec. 11, Memories of a Jubilee Christmas tour will be giving its annual festive performance at Memorial Hall in Blyth. This two-hour recreation of CBC's hit TV Don Messer's. Jubilee has 13 cast members. Tom Leadbeater, the last original member of the Jubilee Christmas tour, has been on the tour for as long as the original TV show was aired and has loved every minute of it. "I have no regrets at all. It's been a ball doing this show and performing it with these people has made it even better." said Lcadbeater. Leadbeater, along with the talented Marie Gogo, performs the seasonal songs of Jubilee's popular Marg Osbourne and Charlie Chamberlain as well as some duets including Adeste Fideless. "I get a chance to be me in the show. I don't try to imitate Charlie at all, but I think we have the same performing style." Although Leadbeater said one thing he likes about the tour is that he never gets tired of it, his favourite part is "watching the audience members' faces during a performance." "When Goin to the Barn Dance Tonight begins, I love watching the audience beam," said Leadbeater. "They sit back in their seats like they're sitting at home in a chair watching it on their TV again." He said usually an older crowd will get the most enjoyment out of the show, but the last couple of years, he has seen a number of young people attend. "It's nostalgic. It brings everyone back to simpler times when Mr. Messer ran the show," said Leadbeater. t'A lot of kids are taking up fiddling these days and each year there seems to be more and more of them coming to see the show. They (the kids) really seem to get a kick out of watching their grandparents tap their toes and sing along." This memories show, which has been touring across Canada since 1995 to sold out houses, is the brainchild of senior citizen Barbara -Martin, formerly of Sussex, N.B. She became involved in the 50th anniversary of VE Day and staged the recreation of CBC's Don Messer's Jubilee, which then toured the Maritimes. After the tour ended, Martin realized the depth of emotions the seniors felt for the Jubilee and how much they missed it. It was also Obvious that there was not a lot of entertainment out there aimed for seniors, so she dedicated herself to providing this type of entertainment and now has three shows geared strictly for them. "We present the Messer style of music as it was played and the way the audience remembers it... because our show is all about bringing back wonderful memories," Martin said. Aside from Leadbeater and Gogo, the talented cast includes Scott Woods, a Canadian grand masters fiddle champion, Buchta style dancers and some humour with Rudolph the Chipmunk.
