As a result, The Old Mill and
Bainton's Old Mill were approached
this year and they have both
supported the 2004/2005 Hullett
User Guide. Their advertisements
are a 'draw' not only to their own
respective businesses but also,
prospectively, to Grand View
Restaurant and other Blyth
Merchants as day-trippers (from
across Canada and the USA) using
the marsh seek out new area
attractions with which to further
enhance their visits.
Blyth Festival and Scrimgeour's
Food Market have contributed
prizes for Hullett fundraisers. As
well Scrimgeour's is currently
offering the Blyth public an
opportunity to buy into Hullett's
fundraising Farewell to Summer
Raffle (draw date Dec 15) in which
the first prize, is a Caribbean Cruise
for Two.
Nature's Nest in Londesborough
took out a full-page ad in the User
Guide, thereby inviting an
intermediate stop by travelers along
the way.
"The Hullett User Guide is a
publication that is distributed free of
charge," Wick says, "and it is there
to assist any person (local or
otherwise) in navigating their way
through the 5,600 acres of marsh,
swamp and woodlots that are
combined within the property. The
user guide is a necessity and we
always encourage those who use it
along with our facility to support the
businesses that have made the Guide
and our fundraising activities
possible."
The marsh offers experiences of
all kinds: trails for hiking, horseback
riding, bird-watching, cycling and
cross-country skiing, observation
platforms, a venue for wildlife
artists, launches for canoes to
navigate the ponds, an interpretive
trail and an interpretive centre for
youth organizations . and schools
(also families) to learn about nature
in a hands''-on manner, planned
activities led by marsh staff' and
volunteers, guided hunts, annual
pointer and retriever dog trials, an
annual Pheasant Challenge (which is
currently running until Dec. 1)
amongst other activities.
Hulled Marsh is so much more
than many people recognize," said
Wicks.
Much of what Hullett Marsh has
become since the time of its
conception can be attributed the
dedicated efforts of volunteers
associated with the FOH, Ducks
Unlimited Canada and the Ministry
of Natural Resources. The FOH,
being a non-profit .organization,
relies heavily on its volunteers and
Human Resources Skills
Development Canada for staffing
needs.
"Finding advertisers and
preparing the user guide for
publication is no mean feat when the
marsh relies so heavily on
volunteers' time to accomplish it."
'Anyone interested in a copy of the
user guide can pick one up on-site at
Hullett Marsh, at various outlets
across Huron County and at Grand
View Restaurant, The Old Mill and
Bainton's Old Mill in Blyth.
Individuals wishing to volunteer
are always welcome and annual
memberships are available for $25
through their office as well.
Donations are never turned away
and make great tax deductions at
year-end.
All monetary contributions go to
support FOH environment and ,
wildlife projects within the marsh
habitat ... reaping the rewards of
your generous contributions right
here - in your own `backyard'.
