Marching to a happy rhythm in life
By Rev. Brent Kipfer
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship ,
Writing this column is my final
task before heading off for a week of
holidays. The past week has been
full of highlights: five inspiring,
tiring and joy-filled days of Kids'
Corner. some productive planning
meetings- — and my youngest
brother's wedding on Saturday.,
A good, week - but 1 am ready for
a vacation!
Even when we love our work,
holidays give us an opportunity to
step outside our normal routine and,
be refreshed. God has designed us
with both a need to work and a need
for regular Sabbaths. The story of
creation in Genesis describes the
rhythm of work and rest which God
has established in this world.
After six days of work, "...the
creation of the heavens and the earth
and everything in them was
completed. On the seventh day„
having finished his -task, God rested
from all his work. And God blessed
the seventh day and declared it holy,
because it was the day when he
rested from his work of creation."
(Genesis 2:1-3)
Work and rest, work and rest. It's
a healthy and heavenly pattern - a
rhythm we neglect attour peril. Both
are crucial for our well-being and
success.
Marva Dawn tells a story about a
wagon train of pioneers on its way
from St. Louis to 'Oregon. Its
members were Christian. so the
whole group made it a habit to stop
for the Sabbath day. Winter was
approaching quickly, however, and
some among the group began to
panic in fear that they wouldn't
reach their destination before the
heavy. snows.. A few members
suggested that they should speed
things up by driving seven days a
week.
Some were keen to make the
change; others wanted to stick with
their habit of taking a break every
seven days. One person proposed
that the wagon train split into two
groups — those who wanted to
observe the Sabbath and those who
preferred to travel on that day.
So. that's what they did. Both
groups set out and travelled together
until the next Sunday, when one
group continued and the other
remained at rest.
Guess which group got to Oregon
first.
The ones who kept the Sabbath
reached their destination before the
others.
Both the people and the horses
were so rested by their weekly break
that they could travel much more
vigorously and effectively the other
six days of the week. God honours
those who honour his commands.
Sometimes it requires a lot of faith
just to take some time off. When
you are on a deadline, it can he an
extraordinary act of trust in God to
lay your work down for a day. When
we honour the Sabbath or go away
on holiday, we are exercising faith
that God can keep the world running
without us.
A church can even thrive when its
pastor is on vacation!
What agenda does God have in
store for you this summer? Even if
your vacation possibilities are
limited, what are some of the ways
in which God might be at work to
refresh you and give you new
energy? How is the balance between
work and play, busyness and rest, in
your life?
God wants to lead us into a healthy
rhythm of work and rest because his
desire is to "renew you in his love"
(Zephaniah 3:17). It's an unbeatable
invitation. Let's take him up on
it!
