The Greyhounds hockey team in Blyth held its annual ball
tournament on July 24 with teams registered from all across

Blyth Thunder ends season with silver medal
Twenty teams participated in the
U-11 soccer tournament held in
Clinton July 19-24. Blyth Thunder
was proud to take second place in
the tournament.
Each player received individual
silver U-11 finalist trophies for their
outstanding efforts.
Blyth's first game was July 20
against Lucknow III. Blyth was
quick to score with a goal from
Brent Drost. assisted by Brendon
Boven. Boven scored the second
goal on • an assist from Drost and
Courtney Bos.
Lucknow tied up the game before
halftime.
Bos scored the first goal of the last
half. However, Lucknow played
with determination and scored two
more goals against keeper Greg
Roetcisoender.
It was a disappointing 4-3 loss for
Blyth.
The second game was July 21
against Goderich McDonalds.
Drost scored the only goal of the
first half on an assist from Boven.
Boven and Jacob Nonkes assisted
Drosf's second goal. Bos and Boven
assisted Drost's final goal of the
game.
Goderich played a strong game,
but did not score against keeper
Tanner Merner, resulting in a 3-0
victory for Blyth.
The third game was July 22
against Ripley. Roetcisoender
played as Blyth's goalkeeper and
earned a shutout. Micah Nonkes
scored two goals and earned one
assist. Drost had seven goals and one
assist. Bos scored one goal and
assisted on four. Boven assisted on
two goals. Alex Raynard and Jacob
Nonkes assisted on- one goal each.
Roetcisoender scored:one goal on a
penalty shot.
Blyth won this game 13-0. This
win put them in sixth place earning
Blyth a spot as one of the eight
teams to play on Saturday in the
finals,
On July 24 the Thunder once again
played Lucknow III, the third-place
team going into the quarter finals.
This was a very competitive and
evenly-matched game.
Drost scored the only goal of the
first half on a penalty shot. Goal
keeper Roetcisoender did not let any
goals in during the first half.
During the second half Nonkes
scored on an assist from Drost and
Boven. Bos assisted on Boven's
goal. Drost scored the next two goals
with assist from Boven.
Lucknow did not give up and
scored five goals.
This left a tie after regulation play,
so there was 10 minutes of overtime.
There were no goals scored so a
shoot-out was needed. Blyth won the
shoot-out, enabling them to move
ahead in the playoffs.
Blyth played an excellent game in
the semi-finals against Wingham
CIBC. After a scoreless first half
Drost got the ball around Wingham's
defence for the first goal of the
game. Bos assisted Drost for another
Thunder goal.
The Brussels Midgets hosted
Exeter on July 19.
Sarah McDonald would pitch The
complete game for Brussels.
Exeter led off with a single. A
strikeout and a fly to Amy Bishop
counted for two quick outs. However
two walks and a single would load
the bases and eventually score a run.
McDonald came up with another big
strike-out to finish the inning.
Katie Aitchison and Lacey McCall
got on in the bottom of the first on
walks. Strike-outs by Jenna Fischer
and Catrina J6sling were followed
;y a long fly ball byMcDonald to
send Brussels back to the field
without scoring any runs.
Exeter's first batter struck out
then a single turned into a quick
double-play by McDonald, Fischer
and Bishop.
On the offensive again. Rachel
Speers turned a catcher's error into a
triple. Mary Aitchison hit- sacrifice
to tie the game, before Bishop and
Candice Ross struck out to end the
inning.
U-6 teams
square
off
It was a close match for the U-6
houseleague Brussels 1 and Brussels
teams during their July 21 game,
but in the end it was Brussels I that
walked away with a 5 - 4 victory.
The whole team worked hard
during the entire game, but it was
Nic Zwep and Tyler Cronin who
scored two goals each.
. Excellent goaltending by Rachel
Hastings, Jessica Johnston, Heather
Hastings, Austin Johnston, Zwep
and Cronin.

Brussels IV won 8 - 3 against
Brussels Ill in a recent game.
Great team work was shown by
the whole team. Showing much
improvement was Darren Evans.
Jasmine Vader, Konrad McArter,
Jamie Perrault, Kaitlin Wick and
Seth McCallum.
Excellent goaltending was given
by Kailey Wheeler, Jenessa Neill,
Erin McMahon and Sarah Dwyer.
Wingham came on strong and
scored two . goals against
Roetcisoender. Wingham's second
goal was scored with only 30
seconds left.
Another overtime was necessary
since the game ended in a tie.
Nonkes passed to Drost who got
around Wingham's defense for the
winning goal.
"Blyth Thunder worked extremely
hard to beat this team,' said coach
Mary Ann Drost.
During the regular soccer season
Thunder could not defeat Wingham.
The Thunder came to the
championship game as a team with
many game "battle scars and aches
and pains," said Drost.
Thunder had to play three games
within 5 1/2 hours, so they were a
very tired bin determined team.
Their opponent for the final game
was Clinton United.
Clinton was first to score on a
penalty kick in the first half.
In the third Exeter started off with
two singles. Brussels made three
quick outs to strand the runners.
In the bottom of the inning
Melissa Souch waited out a walk. K.
Aitchison was sent to first on an
error to the catcher. Fischer's single
would fill the bases. McCall was
called out on an infield fly.
McDonald would hit a double
followed by a triple from Josling to
clear the bases. However the rally
was halted with strikeouts to Speers
and Bishop.
In the fourth Exeter closed the gap
scoring two runs on three singles,
two walks and two strikeouts.
M. Aitchison led off for Brussels
During the second half Drost got
the ball away from Clinton to score
Blyth's first goal. Clinton played
strong and scored again. Thunder
kept the pressure on, but they were
unable to score again. The final
score was 2-1 to Clinton.
"The Thunder had a terrific
season. They played very hard in the
year-end tournament and should be
extremely proud of their second-
place finish. This group of players
really pulled together as a team,"
said coach Drost.
Thunder's defense was Kelly
MacDonald, Jolande Oudshoorn,
Jeanette Schramm and Jason Young.
Halfbacks were Brendon Boven,
Jacob Nonkes and Alex Raynard.
The forwards were Courtney Bos,
Brent Drost, Zacharay Drost, Tanner
Merner, Micah Nonkes, Marijke
Oudshoorn and Kate Packer. Greg
Roetcisoender was goalkeeper.
Coaches were Matthew Hart, Alan
Young and Mary Ann Drost.

Exeter left runners in scoring
position on one single, a walk and
one strike-out.
Brussels in the bottom of the
inning would open up the game with
singles by Fischer, McCall.
McDonald and Speers. Three runs
crossed the plate.
Exeter answered by scoring a
single run on one hit and a walk for
their final at-bat.
The final score was 8-4 for
Brussels.
