Challenge: Getting enough calcium and vitamin D to
maintain strong bones and protect against osteoporosis
Solution: Women 19-50 years of age should consume 1000 mg of calcium and 5
ug (200 IU) of Vitamin D per day. Milk and milk products, such as cheese and
yogurt provide the most readily available source of calcium and other bone
building nutrients. Other sources include calcium-fortified beverages (soy, rice and
orange juice) tofu made with calcium sulfate, salmon and sardines with bones,
sesame seeds and almonds. Bok Choy, kale and broccoli also provide calcium but
in smaller amounts. Vitamin D is found in fluid milk, eggs, fish and fish liver oils,
margarine as well as in soy and rice beverages fortified with vitamin D. Sunlight
on the skin can be a major source of vitamin D but is limited in Canada from
October to March and by use of sunscreens. To prevent osteoporosis women are
encouraged to get enough calcium, vitamin D and protein, limit caffein.e, have
sodium in moderation, and keep active particularly with weight-bearing pEtivity.

Festival's day-camp begins
are similar to a day camp as the kids
will participate in crafts, learn about
playwriting and the rehearsal
process as well as the play topic they
chose.
"It's something new for them to
do in the summer and it introduces
them to the arts," said MacDonald.
She said throughout the course of
the week, the groups will discuss
plays they have previously seen then
they will watch a scene from a Blyth
Festival play, which she said will
"probably be a Donnelly scene."
Then the students will get into
groups of two or three and construct
a play. When all the groups come
together, they will decide which
play to perform on Saturday.
MacDonald said that last year the
group performance of the play
lasted about 10 minutes.
"It was really fun watching the
kids perform. I think they really
liked it," said MacDonald.
She said proceeds of the
workshops will go towards
costumes and other expenses of the
Young Company.
"It's something different outside
that's a lot of fun for the kids to try.
We pack as much into a day as we
can so there is lots for them to
experience."
