THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2004. PAGE 23.
Members attend Westminster Weekend
FROV LONDESBORO
On the evening of June 21, ladies
of Londesborough United Church
met for their regular monthly
meeting. Following dessert. Joan
Whyte, Joan Howatt, Helen Dale
and Mary Peel led the group in
devotions, more specifically, a
service of reconciliation.
The service was intended to
make the women recognize that
God calls all to be agents of
reconciliation in His broken,
hurting world. Everyone, it was
noted, can seek reconciliation in
their personal relationships, in their
communities and in ,the wider
world.
Four candles were lit to
emphasize the theme. The first
acknowledged the need for
reconciliation; the second
syMbolized the forgiveness
received from God. Candle three
was a reminder to work for
-reconciliation while the last candle
lit was a reminder to pray for those
in the world who are working for
reconciliation.
Scripture passages supporting the
theme were Genesis 4: 1-8 (the
story of Cain and Abel); Psalm 72;
Col. 1: 13-23 and Luke 15: 11-32
(the story of the prodigal son).
Appropriate hymns, such as Spirit,
Spirit of Gentleness, were a part of
the worship.
The two women who attended
Westminster Weekend May 28 - 30
offered reports. Cheryl Trewartha
and Marjorie Duizer spoke of the
weekend as a wonderful experience
of sharing, support and learning.
Each of them chose two different
workshops that interested them.
Marjorie attended the music
group that learned an anthem they
presented at Saturday night's talent
show. In the Bible workshop
Marjorie's group studied scriptures
concerning Mary, the mother of
Christ and what her feelings may
have been at various stages of her
life.
Cheryl's first workshop had the
participants learning how to set up
for best results With a camera. In
her second group Cheryl listened to
a storyteller and then the women in
that session tried the craft
themselves. All present that
weekend took a symbol of
themselves to London to
share/display.
Nan Cressman was the theme
speaker for the weekend and
following each of her presentations
all the women broke into small
groups for discussion. Cheryl noted
that one gains new perspectives
from these sessions. Marjorie
reported that the final worship
service on Sunday morning as very
moving, the theme of which was,
Here I Am — I Will Gb.
The business portion of the
evening was conducted by
president Laura Scott. A summer
workday to finish up in the
basement of the church is set for
Tuesday, July 13 at 9 a.m. Cookies
for Camp Menesetung campers
need to be left at the church by July
5. Remember to label the cookies,
list the ingredients and use no nuts
in your baking.
The summer event at Siloam
United Church in London is July
17.
Summer begins for
Hullett students
Classes have ended for another
year at schools across Ontario and
pupils are looking forward to long,
lazy days of holidays. The Grade 8
pupils have said goodbye to
elementary schools and are
anticipating a more grown-up world
at secondary school. Some teachers
have also retired from the task of
managing a classroom. Hullett
Central Public School said goodbye
to just one of their teachers this
year. All the rest of the previous
year's staff will be returning in
September.
Marie Black, Hullett's half-time
kindergarten teacher, has chosen to
retire and Jenna Roy spent some
time talking to her about her career
and future plans.
Mrs. Black has lived in all her life
in Huron County and most recently
just outside Clinton in Hullett Twp.
She attended Stratford Teacher's
College and graduated from the
University of Western Ontario in
1986 after many years of part-time
studying/courses.
Previous to coming to Hullett
Central, Marie taught at Clinton
Gordon Radford is currently a
patient in Seaforth General Hospital
and undergoing tests. Please keep
him and Mary in your thoughts.
The community offers
condolences to Marion Snell and Al
and Barb Bosman and their families
on the recent loss of a husband,
father and grandfather. Jack Snell.
Jack died on Tuesday, June 22 at
Clinton Pulic Hospital.
It's the season for drive-ins once
again. The Fellowship Bible Chapel
will be having an open air drive-in
service each Sunday evening this
summer, nine of them in all. The
services are held on their property
adjacent to their building at the east
edge. of the village. Services begin
at 7 p.m:
These outdoor services have a
history dating back to the early
1970s when they were started on-the
farm of Hank Gelling along Hwy. 8
at Holmesville. Then the church
moved to new premises which
would not accommodate a drive-in.
Public School and the Vanastra
Community School. Her most-
memorable moments have been
seeing how proud and happy pupils
are when they have mastered a
lesson. One embarrassing
experience was being mistaken for a
pupil — possibly because she is a
short person.
Mrs. Black's son, Jeff, is married
and lives in Australia. Her daughter.
Krista, a nurse is married and lives
in Mitchell. Mrs. Black's retirement
time will be spent with her
granddaughter, Kayley, assisting her
ailing in-laws, travelling (perhaps.to
Australia?), reading and pursuing
hobbies. She looks forward to being
able to do things spontaneously.
She states she has really enjoyed
her career as a teacher. Great staff
and wonderful children have helped
create many good memories.
The school and community wish
Marie much happiness in retirement
and wish her to know she will be
missed.
Mrs. Janice Ryan will be sharing
kindergarten teaching with Mrs.
Audrey Kemp come September.
However, their location in
Londesborough revived the idea.
Each service features a guest
speaker who delivers a message
approximately 20 minutes in length.
The evening also offers musical
guests to bring the service to an
hour in total. Refreshments will
follow each gathering. Participants
are welcome to bring lawn chairs
and enjoy a warm summer evening
or tune their radios and stay in the
car if they so wish.
On Sunday, July 4. the speaker is
Don Hill from London. Musical
entertainment, also from London,
will be provided by The Chapelairs.
Classes for the Early Years
Learning Program are once again
being held in the basement of
Londesborough United Church
every Thursday evening.
Children in the Londesborough
area are invited to attend Vacation
Bible School prepared by the Blyth
churches. The programme this year
runs from July 19-23 from 9 to
11:30 a.m. The programme is
suitable for children who have
completed JK to Grade 6.
