Ethel Miner Clare Knox United Church, Belgrave Yesterday was Canada Day! This is a time to celebrate - to recall our history, to acknowledge our diversity, to move forward into the future. Those who gathered in 1867 to declare that this country of ours would be known as the Dominion of Canada did so with optimism, courage, and enthusiasm. To believe that a country that began with Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario would one day be a Dominion that would 'stretch from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth' (Psalm 72:8) was certainly visionary. A recent visitor in our home reminded me of how blessed we Canadians really are. Makanya came from Tanzania, Africa, to visit United Churches in Huron-Perth Presbytery. He shared stories from his country, where 80 per cent of the farms are small (one to two acres) with no modern technology. He marvened at the size of farms in this area; at how efficiently they are run; and the way they are maintained; and at their productivity. He asked questions about animal husbandry, about food preservation and storage, about crop management. He was impressed with all the resources available to students in our school. Makanya explained that education in his country is no longer free, parents must pay school fees if their children are to attend school. This was not always the case, but was imposed by the International Monetary Fund and World Bank when Tanzania became indebted. As I listened to Makanya's stories and heard his comments praising our people, our farms, our schools, and the conveniences we all take for granted, I was able to see our reality with new eyes. And so I offer this prayer of thanksgiving for this Canada Day: Creator God, For this country, Canada, which is our home for the abundance of fields and gardens; for the dedication of farm families - the stewards of the land that you entrusted to us; We give you thanks. For the beauty of lakeshore, countryside, nd our communities Alice Marks with her grandchildren Logan, Mitchell and Victoria Kellington were greeting at Melville Presbyterian Church last Sunday morning. Following the Call to Worship, organist Mary Douma provided accompaniment for the singing of the hymn, Saviour Teach Me Day by Day, after which during the congregational welcoming, a piano solo was played by Laura Armstrong. Psalm 16 was read responsively by We give you thanks. For the freedom to speak out, to be educated, to worship. We give you thanks. For the diversity of people who make this country their home, for shared laughter, encouraging words, and friendships, We give you thanks. For willing workers throughout our land sharing, caring, creating, leading. serving, We give you thanks. May we be the people you created us to be, 0 God. Amen. the congregation followed by the hymn, Follow Me the Master Said. In observance of Sunday school promotion and awards, Rev. Cathrine Campbell announced that this service was to be a celebration of the accomplishment, dedication and learning of the Sunday school children and teachers. The children were asked to come to the front of the church along with their teachers, and the service was turned over Continued on page 22 PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2004.
