After months of anticipation, the completion of the outdoor
pavilion at East Wawanosh Public School, was celebrated
with an official grand opening on June 23. It was built by
parent volunteers and is surrounded by native shrubs and
trees which were purchased through a grant. The special
education technology class at F.E. Madill Secondary School
built and donated eight picnic tables for the students to use
next year or for the community to use during holidays.

Pavilion will welcome EWPS students back in fall
By Elyse DeBruyn
Citizen staff
Although school has let out for yet
another summer, the students at East
Wawanosh Public School are
looking forward to having some
outdoor classes next September
thanks to completion of the new
pavilion.
Thanks to many dedicated hours
by parent volunteers, the 30-feet
long, 15-feet wide and nine feet tall
outdoor pavilion was completed and
celebrated with an official grand
opening.
Shelley Blackmore, principal at
East Wawanosh Public School, said,
although students won't get the
opportunity to use the large pavilion
this year, it gives them something to
get excited about for next year.
"We're thrilled to have it done.
The students will love using it next
year," said Blackwell.
Located on the northwest side by
the playground equipment, the
pavilion was built by eight parent
volunteers.
After applying to the Toyota
Evergreen Foundation for a $1,000
grant, the school was able to
surround the pavilion in native trees
and shrubs.
Huron Landscaping in Lucknow
donated the planting plan for the
trees and shrubs.
Richmond Construction and
Appleby Constuction donated their
time to help build the pavilion while
the school council paid for building
supplies through fundraising.
Through the organization of the
Foundation for Enrichment of
Education in Huron Perth, the
school also applied to Ag-co
Products Ltd., for a $2,500 grant to
pay for the cement floor.
Blackmore said the pavilion will
be used for an outdoor classrooms

education ministry before funds are
released — additional portable
classrooms may be needed at Anne
Hathaway and Sprucedale.
According to business
superintendent Janet Baird-Jackson,
scheduling changes may prevent that
from happening at the Stratford
school, while additional portables
are more likely to be installed at the
Shakespeare site.
Perth East trustee Tina Traschel,
responding to a concern from her
North Huron counterpart Colleen
Schenk about the reintroduction of
portable classrooms, said, "I'm not a
big fan of portables either, but 1
know in Sprucedale's case, their
getting a portable is going to result in
them getting a third kindergarten
class, and they'll be very excited
about that."
students and for community use on
weekends and holidays.
Although many hours of volunteer
time went into the construction of
the pavilion, two students Kyle
Jamieson and Kaytee Richmond,
donated their time to plant the trees
and shrubs which surround the
pavilion.
Aside from the beautiful plants,
eight picnic tables were built and
donated by students in the special
education technology class at F.E.
Madill Secondary School. The
school also donated the material for
the construction of the tables.
