2004 cast brings new faces, old favourites
Some of the most familiar faces
from 29 seasons past and some new
races will he on stage as the Blyth
Festival celebrates its 30th
anniversary season in 2004.
After last season, when he directed
shows but didn't perforrri and a
winter in which he did double duty
as administrator as well as artistic
director. Eric Coates will be back on
stage in two shows in 2004.
First he will recreate his role as
Will Donnelly as the star of the
smash hit The Outdoor Donnellys. In
this larger-than-life role in a larger-
than-life production that spreads
Over the entire village of Blyth.
Coates has to be dashing and athletic
as well as shoWing his acting skills.
Later in the season he'll take on
the central role of Earl Hughes, the
car salesman who traces his lifetime
in the comic Test Drive by Dave
Carley. In this play Coates wears his
hat as artistic director, because he
chose the play and helped the
playwright as he adapted it from his
original award-winning radio script,
as well as the star.
If any other member of the acting
company would know what Coates
is 'going through it would be Janet
Am' s. Twice artistic director of the
Festival, she returns for the 30th
season simply as an actress as
Giselle in Heat Wave and as Bridey
in Cricket and Claudette.
Amos has been part of the cultural
history of Huron County since she
arrived in the summer of 1972 to
take part in the formative theatrical
event of the county's history, The
Farm Show. Currently she is a
professor in the theatre department
at the University of Regina but loves
to come back to the county.
Starring opposite Amos in both her
plays will be one of the Festival's
most beloved actors, Jerry Franken.
He first came to Blyth when
Katherine Kaszas was artistic
director and returned for all but a
few seasons thereafter through the
leadership of Peter Smith, Janet
Amos, Anne Chislett and current
artistic director Eric Coates.
Over the years he's played dozens
of roles, most recently as a
frustrated, abusive Jacob Mercer in
last year's Leaving Home and Russel
in the hilarious Having Hope at
Home. He had even directed shows.
Elsewhere he has performed at the
Stratford Festival, National Arts
Centre and with the original and
national touring version. of The
Drawer Boy.
This year he will take on the role
of Napoleon in Heat Wave and
Speed in Crickett and Claudette.
Returning to recreate her roles in
The Outdoor Donnellys this year is
Kelly McIntosh. She'll play Maggie.
Nora and Bridget in various scenes
in this huge production.
Later in the summer she'll put on
her playwright's hat when her play
Passion is given a public reading.
Also returning for the Donnellys
are: Wes Berger, Sean Dixon, Gil
Garratt, Arras Hopkins, Robert B.
Kennedy, Anne Lederman, Patrick
McManus, Capucine Onn and
Bendan Wall.
Appearing for the first time since
1998 is Jane Spidell who will play
the double role of Dorothy and
Daphne in Test Drive. In her first
summer at the _ Festival she
performed in Yesteryear and
Thirteen Hands.
She has also appeared at the
Stratford Festival, Tarragon Theatre,
Theatre Passe Moraine. Soulpepper,
Manitoba Theatre Centre and The
Citadel in Edmonton.
Two newcomers will star in Salt-
water Moon.
Charlotte Gowdy, who plays
Mary, is a graduate of the National
Theatre School who has appeared in
Recess at Nightwood Theatre in
Toronto.
Darren Keay stars as Jacob in Salt-
Water Moon and as Franklin in Test
Drive. It's the second time playing
Jacob for Keay. He originated the
role in the most recent play in the
Mercer family saga in Soldier's
Heart at Tarragon Theatre in
Toronto. He's also appeared at
Canadian Stage and Theatre
Orangeville, among others.
Also new to the company are
Shama Black and Aaron Franks.
Black plays the roles of Claudette
in Cricket and Claudette and
Louisette in Heat Wave. She
previously appeared at the Shaw
Festival, Theatre Aquarius and the
Thousand Islands Playhouse as well
as on - such television series as La
Femme Nikita.
Franks plays Yannick in Heat
Wave. He has performed a number of
roles at the Stratford Festival as Well
at Tarragon Theatre's Extra Space.
