Midget Girls win
provincial bronze
Great try
Wingham Ironmen gave their best, but came up short in their bid for the OHA Junior C provin-
cial championship, losing four straight to the Grimsby Peach Kings. (Advance Times photo)
Grimsby Peach Kings prove
to be too much tor Ironmen
By Jim Brown
Wingham Advance-Times
It was just not meant to be.
The Wingham Ironmen gave it
everything they had for four games,
but they ran into a better, more deter-
mined hockey team — the Grimsby
Peach Kings.
The Peach Kings scored a 5-2
decision at the North Huron-Wescast
Community Complex last Friday
evening to claim the OHA Junior C
provincial championship and the
Clarence Schmalz Cup for the sec-
ond consecutive year.
Prior to the trophy presentation by
OHA officials. Ironmen coach Louie
Livingston congratulated Grimsby
on winning the series. "We gave it
our all. You're (Grimsby) a great
team." he said.
"I could not have been happier
than I was this past season, being a
part of the Ironmen's 30th anniver-
sary year. I would also like to thank
(assistant coaches) Doug (Neil) and
_Schultzie (Tim Schultz), the training
staff and the equipment people for
making my job easy. And, especially
the players.
"You have been the best.24 players
I've had the pleasure to coach."
According to Livingston. the fans
made it easy for the Ironmen to
"come to the arena and play our
game". He added they have been
supportive all year, but especially
during this playoff run.
Ironmen president Bill McGrath
told the players that during the past
few weeks he had received. phone
calls from fans stating that they were
proud of the Ironmen.
"The people want to have an
appreciation day for you, to show
how proud they are of you for what
you have done," he said. "The
(Ironmen) executive are also very
proud of what you've done."
In the quiet of the Ironmen dress-
ing room, once everything had set-
tled down. Livingston said this
series against Grimsby was "four
hard games".
"Looking back, we didn't realize
just how good they were. In hind-
sight, I may have done some things a
bit different than I did, especially in
the last three games."
"We've never played the left-,wing
trap all season, but if we had worked
on it a bit in practice, we could have
been a bit more successful," said the
coach.
However, he stated he was pleased
that the players never gave up.
"We took a few lumps along the
way. but we were able to get over it."
said Livingston.
Livingston stressed that manager
Steve Coulter had a lot to do with the
team's success this season.
When he became the manager
three years ago, he began a plan,
which culminated in the success this
year. The coach said key acquisitions
this year, such as getting big Nick
Filsinger and goaltender Jason
Blinkhorn were key components to
the team's success.
Livingston added Coulter was
responsible for keeping the players
who returned from last year's squad,
especially over-agers Mitch deBoer
and Phil Austin.
"Steve was quite instrumental in
the Ironmen's success this season,
with his hard tireless work."
Wherf the playoffs started, the
coach said they were putting pucks
in piles, one puck for each win and a
new pile would start after a series
was won.
"We were looking for 20 pucks.
We fell four pucks short," he stated:
He thanked the fans for the sup-
port they have shown the team all
season.
"You helped make it enjoyable and
easy to come to the rink," stated the
coach.
Luke Williams got the Ironmen on
the board first, with Tim Zettler and
Filsinger getting the assists.
Kevin Colontino tied the game at
one with the teams playing 4-on-4.
In the first period, every time the
Ironmen would get a powerplay.
they would nullify it by taking a
penalty of their own.
Chris Stanley restored the lead for
the Ironmen in the second. Trent
McClement earned the assist.
Colontino again evened the score
for the Peach Kings. this time less
then two minutes later and just two
seconds after Zack O'Kralka was
sent off for slashing.
Brandon Filler then tallied two
goals before the end of the middle
frame, to give Grimsby a 4-2 advan-
tage heading into the third period.
Mark Biamonte connected on the
power play to give the Peach Kings
the 5-2 victory.
Referee Lee Rodgers assessed 14
minor infractions to.each team in the
contest.
The Ironmen awards banquet is set
for June 5 at the Knights of
Columbus Centre at the complex.
