Festival presents an evening with Michael Ondaatje
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
Michael Ondaatje, award-winning
novelist and poet, author of I992's
The English Patient will be in Blyth
on Saturday, May 2 for a special
Blyth Festival 30th anniversary
event.
' An Evening with Michael
Ondaatje celebrates "the roots of
Canadian theatre with the DVD
release party of
Ondaatje's The
Clinton Special,
a behind-the-
scenes look at
The Farm Show.
Director Paul
Thompson calls
the event, "very
exciting", in part
because"-
Ondaatje does ONDAATJE
not do many celebrates history
public
performances.
But adding to the excitement is the
DVD. "The film (which Ondaatje
shot in Clinton in 1973) has been
great and when it transferred to VHS
it was a worthy effort. But not as
exciting as what's happened now,"
Women are reminded to mark
Saturday, April 3 on their calendars
and plan to attend the 10th annual
Women's Day Out, at the Blyth
Memorial Hall and the Bainton Art
Gallery, sponsored by the Blyth
United Church Women.
This year's theme is Changing
with the Times. Registration is 9
a.m. The programme runs from 9:30
a.m. to 4 p.m.
, The keynote speaker is Kate
Young of London. She is the director
of community relations at The New
PL.
Also featured will be Eric
Hewison of Trowbridge, who will

Parvo virus is a severe and highly
transmissible disease of dogs that
causes severe vomiting and diarrhea.
The diarrhea is often bloody with a
very-strong smell. Affected dogs are
usually also off feed, listless, and
have a fever. Diagnosis, is based on
clinical signs, a low white blood cell
count, and a test that identifies parvo
virus in the dog's feces.
Parvo virus can affect all dogs, but
is most common in young or
unvaccinated dogs. Parvo can be
fatal, but many dogs will recover if
treated early and aggressively. The
virus is shed in the feces of infected
dogs and is easily transmitted by
contaminated objects or areas. Parvo
virus is stable in the environment for
many months and is resistant to
many disinfectants.
The virus damages the lining of
the intestinal tract and destroys white
blood cells needed to fight infection.
The intestinal damage causes severe
dehydration, electfolyte imbalances,
said Thompson.
The advanced technology has
resulted in improved sound and
visual quality.
"For me it's a huge reminder of
how deeply the community got
involved in this project."
The project started when a group
of actors, under the direction of
Thompson converged in Clinton to
create what has become a theatrical
experience. Through interviews with
local people, •stories were
intertwined into The Farm Show, a
collective production.
Originally staged in a barn, The
Farm Show began to tour in 1973,
about the time Ondaatje appeared on
the scene to film.
"After this Michael became pretty
attached to this part of the world. He
often came up and stayed at our
place and even wrote a couple of
poems here."
"Blyth was one of the memorable
audiences outstanding," said
Thompson of the tour. The idea of
bringing the DVD release to Blyth
30 years later therefore seemed to
make sense. "That show laid the
groundwork for things to come."
Thompson spoke of a discussion
he once had with a local resident
Lisa Scott of Toronto will take you
around the world with tales of her
backpacking adven-tures.
Musical entertainment will be
provided in many different ways.
Blyth's own Heather Elliott will be
singing, while Sharon and Katy
Johnston of Goderich will provide
instrumental music. The Victoria
Public School's Rockin' Ringers
from Goderich will perform under
the direction of Nancy Ross.
For the fashion show, Styled to Fit
of Goderich offers clothing
selections for size 14 plus, while
Heather's Fashion Boutique of
and septicemia (infection in the
bloodstream). It is treated
supportively with intravenous fluids,
antibiotics and anti-inflammatory
drugs.
The best way to protect your dog
against Parvo is proper vaccination.
Puppies should receive a parvo
vaccination as part of their multi-
agent 'distemper' vaccine given at
8 and 12 weeks of age. After the
initial series of vaccinations,
all dogs should be given a booster
vaccination in one year. Thereafter
your veterinarian will discuss
with you an appropriate scheduled
for revaccination based on
your dog's lifestyle and risk of
exposure.

who recalled many of the
productions he had seen at Blyth.
"He had opinions on them all and it
dawned on me that people had a
front-verandah view of a whole
generation of developing
talent."
The DVD came about primarily,
said Thompson, because of
Ondaatje's • success. "Before his
popularity he was a very, very good
poet an award-winning poet, but not
particularly well-known outside the
literary community."
That changed with the success of
The English Patient.
While Ondaatje was less known
for the films he had done (three in
total, according to Thompson), he
was approached by a media
'company about them. Rights to The
Clinton Show were cleared and new
technology worked its magic.
The DVDs will be available at the
event for "a very affordable price,"
said Thompson. In addition to
readings by Ondaatje, there will be
performances by Janet Amos, Anne
Anglin, Eric Coates, David Fox, Ted
Johns, Jack Nicholsen and the
Cameron Family Singers, Miles
Potter, John Roby and Patricia
Vanstone.
Men's Shop of Wingham.
