At the Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Congratulations to Derrick
Bachert who participated at Legion
Zone public speaking in Exeter. He
placed third in the junior division
with his speech on Egon the Egg.
Also attending the day was
Victoria Kellington for primary
storytelling and Thomas Johnson
for the senior division. They also
enjoyed their day and
congratulations to them all.
District darts for Zone C was
held in Hanover. Representing
Branch 218, from winning at zone
level, were Wade Henderson, Steve
Cochrane, Ken Bird, Bob and
Margo Richardson, Andy Overholt,
Ron Schmidt and Anita Little.
They all enjoyed their day but will
not be advancing to provincial
play.
The Cadet Corps is still looking
Majestic Women's Institute met
in the Brussels Library on
Wednesday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m.
There was a good attendance.
Rev. Cathrine Campbell, the
vice-president, presided over the
meeting in the abseqce of president,
Kathy Bridge. The meeting opened
in the usual manner, followed by
the secretary's report read by Leona
Armstrong and the financial report
by Yvonne Knight.
The roll call, "What ,the world
needs is more 9" was well
responded to with various thoughts,
such as more love, kindness or
consideration of others.
Huron. East WI is sponsoring a
course to learn to make a rag quilt.
This will be at the Fordwich
Hurrah it's school break and there
are lots of things Kappening with the
young set. Some have left the
country to find a warm spot, others
have headed for the hills to get in a
little skiing and others are sticking
around just having a good time. It's
pretty nice doing the things that
often are pushed aside in the busy
days. So here's hoping you're
having a good week with just a very
few days left now make the most of
them.
The hockey crews are in their last
games. some a little sad, while
others are quite ready to give the
sweaters the final rinse of the
season.
Don't forget to get your ticket to
for adult leaders. Anyone interested
should contact Captain Grobbo at
the Branch on Tuesday evenings
from 6:30 until 9 p.m.
The Thursday night darts had 11
players taking aim at the boards. In
first place were Adam Smith and
Sandra Josling. They also suffered
a skunk during the evening, but
rebounded to capture the night's
win.
The second-place trio was John
Harrison, Harry Smith and Julie
Harrison. The high score for the
night was shot by Lisa Glanville
with a high of 121 points.
The Friday night supper of
meatloaf was enjoyed by a good
crowd. This week is stew with an
Irish twist.
On Saturday, there were 12
comrades off to District euchre in
Kincardine Congratulations to the
Community Hall on March 30 from
1 p.m. - 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
This course will also be given in
the Brussels Library on April I
Cost is $10.
There is also a course to make a
twisted log cabin quilt in Fordwich
Community Hall on April 20 from
9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $18
which includes the pattern. Bring a
bag lunch.
If interested call Kathy Bridge,
Darlene Harding or Isabel Hislop.
Kathy Bridge, Edna McLellan
and Doris McCall are in charge of
the Canadian Cancer canvass.
Ruth Sauve-Schade introduced
the guest speaker, Michelle
Hansen, who is one of the _ones in
charge of the Women's Shelter -in
the curling party. Forty years is
pretty special so go and enjoy the
night and the memories.
Once again the weather was the
hot topic this week. A nice spring
rain followed by another darn snow
storm add in a little thunder and a
couple of bolts of sky-clearing
lightning and that was it. No wonder
Canadians spend a lot of time
discussing the weather.
We hit a good time to check out
Port Stanley last week. Beautiful
sunny day, not much wind and only
a little ice left by the shore making a
stroll on the beach a real treat. The
shops were open, stocking space and
getting ready for the tourist season.
The warm weather let the fish boats
out into the lake through the last of
the ice. So on Wednesday for dinner
we ate the first catch of the year,
team of Cecil Moore, Harry Smith,
Norm Dobson and Jo-Ann
McDonald for placing fifth out of
40 teams and advancing to
provincial play in Hanover in May.
Comrades Lloyd and Lisa
Glanville, Dale Sauve, Jim Alton,
John and Julie Harrison, Jim
Brown and Sandra Josling had a
great day.
A low point of the day was when
Comrades Julie and Sandra
suffered a skunk at the hands of a
very lucky team.
The luck was with Stuart and
Lois Chamney who took home first
prize from the Brussels Legion
Saturday afternoon euchre. With a
high of 90 points that included 11
lone hands, they were hard to beat.
Coming in second with 75 points
were Reta Flynn and Lorna Ellis.
Close behind with 74 points for
Goderich. The shelter is for all of
Huron County. It also has income
housing consisting of 22
apartments, six apartments are in
Exeter, six are in Clinton and 10 in
Goderich.
There is counselling of all units
when they meet in churches to
discuss family problems.
Arrangements were made for the
ACWW church service to be held
at the Mennonite Fellowship, on
April 25 at 11 a.m. Members of WI
are to be at the church at 10:30 a.m.
Set up at the church by Majestic WI
members is to be at 10:30 a.m. on
Saturday, April 24. The next
meeting on April 14 will begin with
a potluck lunch at 12:30 p.m.
followed by the annual meeting.
absolutely wonderful fresh perch.
Mmmmm.
Enjoy your week.

third place were Elaine Nichol and
Helen Dobson. Not so lucky was
low pair Bev Hayden and Mary
McIntosh.
Lone hand winners were Ed
Stewart and Vera Ahrens.
The Sunday night singles dance
had. 60 present to enjoy the music
of the Red Rascal Band. They
played lots of Irish tunes to
celebrate St. Patrick's.
Dances are held every two weeks
beginning at 7 p.m.
The response has been just great
on the kneelaps and we have had
some brought in already. We will
keep some to send to Parkwood
Hospital and we will send the rest
to Huronlea.
Keep knitting as we can still use
more.
Our condolences to Mery
Schneider and family on the
passing of Lois. Mery and Lois
were good friends and supporters
of the Branch and we will miss
Lois and her ever-present smile on
Friday nights.
The silent auction, a major spring
fundraiser is at the end of April.
Pledge sheets should soon start
coming in. The branch would
appreciate forms in sooner than
later and items can be brought in
anytime.
