Agriculture Brussels Livestock report Good veal sells strong at Thursday's sale Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending March 5 were 2,305 head of cattle, 401 lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed steers and heifers sold at prices $1 to $2 higher. Fancy steers and heifers sold $90 to $100 with sales to $103. Choice steers and heifers sold $82 to $86. Second-cut steers and heifers sold $71 to $81. Top quality and medium cows sold $2 higher with the balance of cows selling on a steady market. On Thursday the good veal sold on a stronger market with the balance selling under pressure. The lambs sold on a good'active trade at slight- ly higher prices. On Friday the calves sold at prices $2 to $4 higher than last week while the yearlings traded $1 to $2 higher. There were 472 steers on offer. Enoch Martin, Linwood, consigned one blonde steer weighing 1,375 lbs. which sold for $103. His overall consignment of fourteen steers aver- aged 1,411 lbs. selling for an aver- age price of $97.52. Five steers con- signed by Gilbert Janssen, Hanover, averaged 1,254 lbs. selling for an average price of $91.80 with his top gold steer weighing 1,295 lbs. sell- ing for $98. David Bowles, Brussels, con- The Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto has approved the sale of the assets of Acre T Farms Ltd. The decision allows KPMG Inc., the court-appointed monitor, to undertake a formal process to sell Acre T's early wean operation and some or all of its other assets, including approximately 5,385 acres of land and Hi-Tech, a warehouse facility for barn construction and repair and its related parts inventory. It is anticipated that a going concern sale will result from this pro- ess. The court decision on Monday also granted a stay of proceedings to June 1, 2004, which gives Acre T continued protection from its credi- tors under the Companies' Creditors An-angemept Act. Acre T sough CCAA protection in October 2003 signed one limousin steer weighing 1,415 lbs. which sold for $94.50. His overall offering of four steers aver- aged 1,401 lbs. selling for an aver- age price of $87.99. Fifteen limousin steers consigned by Sam M. Martin, Chesley, averaged 1,325 lbs. selling for an average price of $87.24 with sales to $95.25. Harvey M. Martin, Waterloo, consigned two limousin steers averaging 1,430 lbs. which sold for $94. His overall offering of twelve steers averaged 1,433 lbs. selling for an average price of $86.07. Eight steers consigned by Ian Johnston, Bluevale, averaged 1.360 lbs. selling for an average price of $85.67 with his top two limousin steers averaging 1,408 lbs. selling to Dominion Meat Packers for $91.75. George Horst, Paisley, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1,400 lbs. which sold to Dominion Meat Packers for $95. His overall offering of seven steers averaged 1,436 lbs. selling for an average price of $85.32. Nine steers consigned by Oscar Horst, Listowel, averaged 1,519 lbs. selling for an average price of $84.35 with his top limousin steer weighing 1,390 lbs. selling for $90. Schmidt Brook Farms, Woodstock, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1,480 lbs. which sold for $93.25. Their overall offering of eight steers averaged 1,500 lbs. sell- ing for an average price of $82.66 after experiencing financial difficul- ties brought on, in part, by a depressed market- for hogs and resultant low commodity prices. Acre T Farms Ltd., a leading Ontario hog producer, was founded in 1982 by Joe and Miriam Terpstra, and grew into a multi-million dollar operation. At the time Acre T-sought CCAA protection it had been a full 15,000 sow hog production loop, control- ling all phases of production - sow, nursery, finishing and sow replace- ment - through to market sale. Early weans were sent to third party nurs- eries and then to the company's fin- ishing barns, or third-party finishing contractors, to be grown to market weight. Andy VanderVeen, Blyth, consigned two limousin heifers averaging 1,268 lbs. which sold for $93. His overall consignment of eight heifers averaged 1,257 lbs. selling for an average price of $86.33. Ten heifers consigned by Ken Shortreed, Walton, averaged 1,269 lbs. selling for an average price of $84.88 with his top limousin heifer weighing 1,205 lbs. selling to Dominion Meat Packers for $91.25. The court at that time approved the process for transforming Acre T into an early wean operation. The judge also sanctioned Acre T's right to repudiate contracts with its nurs- ery and growing contractors once the hogs in their care had passed through the nursery or finishing stage. On Monday the court was told that since the transformation to an early wean operation began the company has reduced its inventory of hogs and weaners from about 120,000 pigs on Jan. 4 to about 72,000 on Feb. 15.
