At The Movies "ReCommendation for Mercy", directed by- Canadian Me rray Markowitz, takes another look at the 1959 trial of Steven Truscott, and brings to the viewers the events which will again have people wondering, Was the fourteen-year-old boy innocent or guilty?" Two books have become national best-sellers since then, "the Steven Truscott Story" by Bill Trent and "The. Trial of Steven Ttuscott" by Isabel LeBourdais. The film, "Recommendation for Mercy". adds nothing new to what is already known about the case, but presents the alternative idea that perhaps Truscott was the victim of an angry community and its judicial system. Though the characters and places 'in the film, have been changed, viewers will recall the events of the rape-murder and trial as the movie version unfolds." John' Robinson, the 14 year old boy linked to the murder by circum- stantial evidence, is played by Andrew Skidd of Guelph, Ontario. Much of the filming was done in the 'Guelph area,' and hundreds of actors and non-actors Were audi- tioned for roles by Markowitz. "Recommendation for Mercy" started out to be a low-budget film, but ended up costing $500,000 to make. It will without doubt, be a popular movie in Ontario where .people remember the trial, but whether or not it is a financial success when it leaves. its home ground, remains to be seen. REGULAR PRICE. MacDonald of Lucknow enjoyed a Thanksgiving and wedding anniversary dinner at the home of their son and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Graham MacDonald in London. Other members of the family whO attended were Miss Margaret MacDonald of Sarnia and Dr. and Mrs. John MacDonald and family, also of Sarnia. Also present were Misses Anne and Susan Gardner of Baffin Land, Northwest Territories. Mr. and Mrs. Graham' MacDonald' and their son Bill spent their holidays 'at Baffin Island a year ago. Anne and Susan's father is "the rector of the Anglican Church at Baffin Land, and he and his wife invited the MacDonalds to sleep in the Church as the MacDonalds were tenting and some of the nights were very cold. • When Anne and Susan .extoress- ed their desire to go to high school and there was no high school in. Baffin Land, the MacDonalds invited the girls to live with them and go to high school in London which they are presently doing. Mr. Kemp, a Goderich teacher who spent several years teaching school in the Arctic, spoke to the Lucknow 'United Church Women at their Thankoffering meeting rec- ently. He knows the Gardners as he taught five years in Baffin Land and was quite surprised to hear that the girls were attending school in London. n Baffin Land is about 1000 miles north of Montreal near the Arctic' Circle. by David Woods As a profesSion, denture thera-pists have a problem. People aren't too sure what they do. none' at all. And that's understandable since the law governing the precise role, of Ontario's 320 denture therapists (a law with teeth in it, you might say) was only proclaimed at the beginning of 1975. A series of happenings led up to that law. Several years• ago certain dental technicians began to feel that they could get on with the business of making dentures without the supervision of a dentist. Some of them opened Offices and dealt directly v 1th the public, and, as a result, a few were prosecuted for practising dentistry without a license. In 1972/4 a bill was brought into effect that permitted denture thera- pists licensed by the province to practise their craft without direct supervision. But in the same year the bill was withdrawn and replaced with a new one that made super- vision by a dentist mandatory. Denture therapists were under- standably unhappy, about this and made their feelings known to the government. In 1974, a new bill provided that the denture therapists could make, complete dentures-but not partial ones - without the supervision of a dentist. The bill was given filial • reading in "June, 1974, and became the law of the province in January, 19752 So the situation now is that den- ture therapists can deal directly PAGE TWENTINFIVE with the public in the manufacture and sale of complete sets of den- tures. They are licensed and regu- lated 'in exactly the same way as other health care professionals. This regulation is performed by the new Governing Board of Den- ture Therapists, a body appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council and consisting of six den- ture therapists and three lay people. The Board sets examinations and is responsible for registration, licens- ing and complaints. If it's dental care you're after, go to dentist. If you need a com- plete set of dentures, you have the choice of either a dentist or denture therapist. It's a thought to chew on, anyway. 22. 193 centres price of I at 9c. ccreased e stated e being Most of us can say with reason- able assurance what occupational therapists or physiotherapists do .. but ask someone to define the work of denture therapists and you're likely to get a vague answer, or
