Mr. and Mrs. Harold Courtney marked their 50th wedding anni- versary at their Pine River area home on Sunday, October 12th. A large numbet of people attended open house both afternoon and evening to extend best wishes. Harold Lloyd Courtney and Mary McLennan were married •on Octob- er 22, .1925 by Rev. Reid of Bethel Died At B.C. Ambrose Readings passed away in Sidney, British C u ibia on October 6th. He is survi ed by, his wife Martha (MacCallu ) Read- ings; • one daughter and one granddaughter, also a brother and a sister, all of B.C. Funeral arrangements were in 'charge of McCall Brothers of Victoria, B.C. with service ip the Floral Chapel on Thursday, Octob- er 9th at 2.15 p.m. Interment was in Royal Oak Burial Park, Victoria, B.C. • CALL H. Mrs. Arnold conducted the ' business part of the meeting with Mrs. Blue as secretary. At the December meeting a small bazaar will be held and all are reminded to bring along some kind of a donation. We were all reminded that the first day of the Winter Fair is free 'to all Senior Citizens. A' report on the Zone Rally held • at' Owen . Sound was given by Mrs. Arnold. A moment of silence was held in memory of, Russell Needham and Mrs. Sophia Pollock, after which a prayer was made by Reg Moore. The Senior Citizen's song was sung. Lunch- was served by Mrs. Amelia McLeod,,Mrs. E. Sutherland, Mrs. D. Gossel, Mrs. Cornish and Mrs. L. Culbert. Tidy-up committee was Jim Tout and John MacKay. Bob Courtney Gets Life Membership An overflow crowd of more thin 150 attended the annual meeting of the Bruce County Historical Society held Friday, October 17th in the Knox Presbyterian Church, Walk- erton. The speaker was Geography Professor .W. Fieguth, University of Western 'Ontario, London. , His topic dealt with the import- ance loCal history plays in enjoy- ment of the environment. He pointed out that outdoor recreation needs variety and surprise and. that people are fascinated with the past. Recreation involves not only a change in place but a change in time. This is )vhere the preserva- tion of local history plays' its part. An area which one visits should present an image that visitors can take home with them. - Bruee County has unique characteristics of local .history which should be preserved as a buffer against the effects of mass media and 'large scale organization. He encouraged our preserving the landscape which our children and grandchildren would appreciate and cherish. Bruce Krug, Chesiley and Robert Couttney of Pine River were each presented with Life Membership 'plaques. Bruce Krug had been the Society's first president when it was organized in 1957. George graduated from Centralia College in Agriculture Business Management in 1971. After two years at Owen Sound with Co-op', he t pent three years as Branch Supervisor at Paisley under U.C.O. George will alternate week about from serving the Lucknow and Teeswater branches, on the road. -Advertisement. Happy Hearts Meet At Ripley The Happy Hearts' .Club of Ripley met Friday evening, Octob- er 10 at 8 pan. at the Legion Hall. There was quite a good attendance. Reg Moore led in a sing song.' Hostesses were Anne and Eugene Martyn. Gordon Munn, a former Ripleyite and now teaching at Stoney Creek brought pictures, he had taken at the re-union and other interesting slides. Many were the candid camera shots of local people and all enjoyed these very much.' Mrs. Stewart Needham thanked Gordon, who had been a former pupil of hers.. Reg Moore read a fine poem on• the "Ripley Re-union". He ' was not to tell the name of the writer but we noticed he handed it over to Mrs. Stewart Needltm. They have spent all their Married years at Pine River, just east of Highway 21. In the early 1940's, Harold opened a seed and grain business in Ripley, which he., still operates. They have one son Elmer Courtney, his wife Joyce and six ' grandchildren, Lynn, Gail, Elliott, Carmon, Joan and Ann Courtney. On Saturday evening, Mr. and Mrs 'Elmer Courtney entertained friends and relatives at their home at a dinner party in honour of the anniversary. Presiding at the tea table for the Sunday observance were Mrs. Neil MacLennan, Mr's. Wesley Os- borne, Mrs. Peter Cameron, Mrs. Mervyn Funston, •Mrs. Robt. Marshall and Mrs. Bert Irwin. Friends attended from .,Toronto, London, Guelph, OWen Sound, Listowel, Lucknow, Woodstock and surrounding district.
