Nothing Came
Close To August
Heavy Rainfall
Harold Greer, who records the
weather locally for the official
government records as a hobbit' and
community service, has some
interesting figures on rainfall in
recent years and it would indicate
that this area has never seen so
much rain, in so short a time, as it
did on Sunday, August 24.
As it happened, Harold was'
away that week end but his
neighbour,, acting as a standin,
recorded 6.95 inches (plus) over-
night„ something that exceeded
other heavy rainfalls by inches.
In October 1954, during HUITi-
cane Hazel, 4.75 inches was
recorded over; a 4-day period as
opposed to •the recent 1-day. The
falls in 1954 were October 14, .64
inches; , October 15, 1.65; October
16, 1.79; October 17, .67.
It is interesting to note that
history had repeated itself on those
Hurricane Hazel dates. On
October , 14, 15, 16, 1893, the
following rainfall was recorded,
2.25, 2.16, .16 for a . total of 4.57
inches.
On. July 10, 1887, 1.90 inches of
rain fell in 55 •minutes.
, Other interesting figures includ-
ed: July 22, 1971, 2.50 inches; July
9, '1949, 1.96 inches; July 22, 1919,
2.84 inches; July 8, 1917, 2.80
inches; May 9, 1899, 2.63 inches
November 24, 1891, 2.74 inches.
