N.F.U. NEWS
By. G. Austin
At a special meeting held in
Hanover, District 7 members of the
N.F.U., with representation from
District 5, expressed their dissatis-
faction with the, Ontario Beef Calf
Stabilization program. Following
this, 50 N.F.U. leaders from Reg-
ion 3 (Ontario) met in an emerg'en-
cy meeting in Toronto on August
'25. They decided. on 5 changes
which would make the call stabiliz-
ation program more acceptable to.
produCers. They were that the
deadline for enrollment be extend-
ed; second, that this be an interim
program until such time as the
federal government accommodates
a national plan; third, we insist that
the support level of the Ontario
plan be no less than seventy cents;
fourth, that the enrollment fee will
not exceed five dollars per cow per
year as lohg as this program is
provincial; fifth, we strongly insist
that supply-management be in-
corporated to deter greedy
froM destroying the program,
by placing an upper limit of I00
cows that are eligible for in(!.vidual
family farms with provi6on made
for partners. Under no circum-
stances should expansion drivil-
e.dges be given to industrial
corporations.
A telex of the needed changes
was sent to Premier William Davis
with a request that he reply by
August 29. Copies were sent the
Liberal and NDP parties.
