than delivering mail,.
"They ,have been involved in
matters of life and death. They -
have carried good news and bad.
They have been public servants in
the truest sense, and certainly not
just for the money."
"I'm talking aboutresponsibility
and dedication -- old-fashioned
virtues that need to be rediscover-
.ed."
Mr. Mackasey made these
statements, at an informal luncheon ,
to hOnour the couriers in the
Parliamentary Restaurant. In
addition to the luncheon, they were
presented with souvenir stamp
albums by their respective Mem-
bers of Parliament.
The couriers spent two days in.
Ottawa. They were met at, the
Ottawa. International Airport (Up-
lands) by a Public Affairs official
from the Canada Post Office, who
Shown, from the left, are Peter M.
Johnston of Lucknow, Joseph
Ritchie of Grand Valley and Melvin
Sheehey of Fenelon Falls. The '
acted as a guide during their stay in
the Nation's capital.
They were given a tour of
Ottawa, which included signing the
guest book at Government House,
driving by the Prime Minister's
residence, gockcliffe Village and
seeing the National Postal Mus-
eum, which opened in late Septem-
ber, 1974.
Following the luncheon, they
attended
,
the daily Question Period
in the House of Commons where
they \were introduced to MPs, who
gave them a thunderous ovation.
Later, Mr. Mackasey introduced
them to Prime Minister Trudeau,
and to the Speaker of the' House,
the Honourable James Jerome.
Mr. Johnston's MP, Crawford
Douglas, (Bruce-Grey), who'first
recognized the opportunity for
honouring the couriers, said,
"There are few people in' Lucknow
and Holyrood who don't know and
recognize Peter as a friend, and it's
a great honour for me to be able to
recognize the great job he has

done."
In making the' Desjardins stamp
albums available for presentation,
Mr. Mackaaey said, • "These seem
insignificant, but it really is the
best possible way we can show our
appreciation for ' the splendid job
you men have done."
Mr. Douglas in the House said
the, following words: •
"Mr. Speaker, I would 'like at
this time to pay tribute to three
men Who are in the gallery this
afternoon (June 23) who to me
personify the'true picture of labour
in Canada, men who have served
their fellow Canadians unstintingly
and faithfully for more, than half a
century. The three gentleman
sitting in the Speaker's gallery
represent over 170 years of rural-
mail service in Ontario. They are,
Joseph Stanley Ritchie of Grand
Valley. in the federal riding, of
Wellington-Grey 7 DufferinWater-
loo; Melvin Sheehey of Fenelon
Falls in the riding of Victoria-Hali-
burton and Peter M. Johnston of
Lucknow in my riding of Bruce-
Grey."
Peter has an impressive record of
service since taking over the mail
service position.
Each day for many years, he met
the train in Lucknow and hauled all
HolyrOod mail to the post office at
Holyrood. Here it was sorted into
its proper rural routes. Peter then
drove the R. R. 3 Holyrood route
and later transported all Holyrood
outgoing mail back to Lucknow to.
make train connections. The'
contract of hauling from Lucknow
to Holyrood ceased' when the post
office started using trucks instead'.
of the: train, but Peter continued' to
drive R. 3 Holyrood.
Peter's rural route was started in
1915 at which time the late Philip
Stewart had the contract for about
2 1/2 years. Peter , took over in 1918
and operated the- route until
officially retiring in . March ,o

"Talk about service",
Peter, "in 1925 you could

would be' delivered at 9 ad
next morning at Holyrood."
As well as his regular mail
over the years, Mr. John
knowledge of the mail d(
service gained him many
duties.
He ran the Holyrood Post
for 1 1/2 years following the dl
Miss Susan Purvis before
postmaster was appointed.
He handled the early in
