MON., TUES. • JULY 20,.21, 22 KINCARDINE Residents of this Lake Huron resort town are beginning to wonder if they have their own brand Of Loch NesS monster. "Fifteen to 20 feet long with ripples on their backs, and swimming offshore of Huron Ridge," a resident reported to the provincial police detach- Ment here. The Huron Ridge woman said she and several others were on the beach about 7:30 p.m. July 1 when they saw what looked like a log go by. They were startled to see it - lift its "head" and change di- rection. At least nine more came along later, she said, "definitely going against the current." People ordered their chil- dren out of the water. A police boat patrolled the area, but found nothing. Po- lice suggested the "monsters" could have been large carp surfacing. "When the water's calm, water flowing over rocks location marker to wash ashore in this area was found recently at, Emmerton Beach, four miles south of Kincardine, and Ontario ProVin- cial Police caution' that the' flares, can be a hazard. The first one found on Ontario shores was located two-months ago just north of. Douglas Point. The flares contain a phosphorous subStance that is actuated by contact with water. They are normally dropped by airplanes to mark locations of ships in distress. The one that came ashore Wednes- day still had some of the phosphorous intact. Police believe it could .detonate, inflicting 'severe burns. • The flares will float. Made of aluminum.Oey are about 18 inches long, cylindrical, ,and about three inches in diameter. Weight is 4 3/4 pounds. If you're doing nothing at all decay has already set in. NEED PAPER For Your Duplicator? STENCILS?, MASTERS? INK? THE SENTINEL Has Them All PHONE 528-2822 Fire Prevention In Haymows Spontaneous combustion a haymow can destroy the 'hay and the building in which it stored. To take the temperature, a 1/2 inch pipe or tube approximately 10 feet in length cap be used. The end of the tube shoUld have a point of hardwood riveted to it, and a few holes, 1/4 inch 'in diameter, made just above the hardwood.. The tube should be inserted into the bay. Drop a 'candy or oven thermometer attiched to a string into the tube and leave it for five minutes. • After five minutes, the tempera- ture should be noted and compared to the following scale: if the temperature is 150 degrees, the danger zone is near and observa- tions should be made every day; at 160 degrees, inspections should be made every four hours; at 175 degrees, fire pockets may be auticipated and the fire pumper called to wet ,down the hay. If the temperature reaches 185 degrees„ the hay should .'be removed and the fire pumper available, since flameS will develop when' the fire pockets contact the air. A temperature of 210 degrees means the hay is almost sure to ignite. Workmen should never work alone and should always, have ropes tied around their waists as a safety measure when working on the haymow. Long planks should be placed over the hay ,for mem to stand on and observe or remove the hay. , Behind every real success in this life lies good management and superior judgment. • • • LYCEUM • WiNC,k1AN, Pr4ONI I • • ADULT ENTERTAINMENT ' :The Tidal of Billy - • ••••••••••••••••• • STARTS WEDNESDAY, JULY 23rd • • ONE SHOWING DAILY 8:00 P.M. But the woman who first spotted the unidentified swim- ming object has her own theory about what caused it— the Douglas Point nuclear de- velopment. "Maybe the warm water up there is making things grow bigger." Don' White, an information officer at the plant rejected the , theory. Some species of fish prefer the channels where warm water flows into Lake Huron from the plant, he said. But there has been noth- ing to indicate the warm water encourages unusually large specimens. • The Huron Ridge woman said a resident of the south end of Kincardine has told 'her she saw similar things in the water from her hilltop 'home a few weeks ago. And the people who were on the beach on Huron Ridge on Dominion Day also saw them, but she doesn't' know who the people 'were. Asked to describe the "crea- tures," she said; "I've never seen an eel, but they were like what I' think an eel would look This is not the first time Kincardine residents have re- ported seeing unusual animals in their community. A baboon was reported sighted last Oc- tober, and two months ago some residents claimed they saw a bear in their sub- division at the north edge of town.
