Now that the tulips have come and gone from the gardens in front of the Centre Block, it certainly won't be very long until the summer ceremony of the changing of the guard will begin to take , place again each morning, and the nation's capital will once again become a haven for the tourist trade. I for one certainly wouldn't want it any other way. As far as 'I am concerned, a summer visit to the nation's capital should be rated very highly in the priority of travel for every citizen of this country, and particularly for all our young citizens and the new Canadian. ,Now, .as I promised in our last Hill Talk, I will give you at this time a run-down of the results of our questionnaire. First of all, a total of 21,000 questionnaires were sent out to the riding. Our first - 'impressions of returns had indicat- ed to' our inexperienced eye ... a record return. 'However, as sometimes is the case, our first indication was not as accurate as we had thought. We did however, receive some 2,811 returns from the survey, giving us a very respectable 13.02%, which is considerably higher I find, than has been the case of many of the questionnaires sent from the Hill. As you know, four areas of concern were canvassed: (1) •Capit- al Punishment, (2) Federal Farm Programs, (3) Unemployment In- surance Commission and (4) Tran- sportation, (Stol or Short Take-Off and Landing). B) Do you feel that U.I.C. benefits encourage unemployment?, Yes: 76%, No:15%, No Comment:. 9%. Perhaps now, I might make a few comments on the results. In regard to Federal Farm Programs, Ques- tion A), it seems to me that the majority of those answering the question and the questionnaire in general were from urban areas, rather than rqral ones, as they indicated quite often on the returns that they did not have enough farming background to make comments on this particular ques- tion. In regard to the beef stabilization question, I might just tell you that the Farm Stabilization Bill has passed tiwough the Committee stage, and I ' hope that once it receives final approval, that farm- ers in the area will find the new program more suitable to their needs in every respect. However, in Question C) of Federal Farm Programs, there was almost unani- mous agreement. The answer was a whopping 73% yes, as to whether the ban should remain on the importation of cattle treated with DES from the United States. One important fact that was shown in the question on Unem- ployment Insurance was that people felt that the system of Unemployment Insurance Benefits should be retained, but that it should be kept with some basic changes done to it in terms of basic concepts and gals. Now to the last question in regard to STOL type air service. • From the return, I gathered from the' remarks that many people did not know what STOL was all about. Therefore, next month, I hope to take a closer look at the STOL Program to let ypu know what it actually is, as it pertains to our, area and southwestern Ontario as well. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for participating in the Questionnaire, and to ,assure you that your -, thoughts and opinions -are of extreme importance to me, as they assist me in every way in my representation of you, here in Ottawa. Well, this has been a little longer than usual this month, so I will close off here, and laye some room for the rest of this week's news. Until next time, Crawford Doug- las, wishing you good luck and good health from Parliament Hill. ' THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO PAGE SEVENTEEN
