BETTER TRACTOR LIGHTS
Initially it seems that tractor
lights were just designed to help
you find your way- home. How-
ever, now that there is a lot- of
night field work, many tractors
around the Country have inade-
quate lighting; the lights on some
do not even work. Replacement
lights are available that do a
better job than the originals. In
the 4 - 1/2 " size the lamp numbers
4511 (6 volt) and 4411 (12, volt)
will give a long rectangular bedm..
In the 5 - 3/4" size' the numbers
are 4019 and 4419 respectively. A
wide-spreading flood type beam
is available also. These 'lamps are
especially good' on ,thb rear of
the tractor. In the 4 - 1/2 " size the
numbers are 4617 (6 volt) and 4406
(12 volt). In the 5 - %" size the
numbers are 4013 and 4413 respec-
tively. Most of these lamps will
cost between 7 and 8 dollars at
auto supply stores. Many other
lamps are available, including
aircraft and landing lights, for
those who wish to design their
own system. Vibration and alter-
nator output are limiting factors,
however.

CONTROL OF. ANNUAL.
GRASSES IN CORN
If you have grown corn in the
same field for more than 2 or 3
years then you could start running
into a problem with annual grass-
es. The annual grasses — foxtail,
crabgrass, old witch, and barn-

As a follow up to poem "The
Pickled Few", which appeared
recently in The Sentinel, Lane
Gardner of Ashfield has sent us the
following poem, with an • opposite
viewpoint.
THE CHALICE
She drank from the Chalice of
Pleasure,
Reigned but as Beauty can reign;
Until she exhausted the measure,
Then she drink from the Chalice of
Pain.
She drank from the 'Chalice of
Joyance,
Dressed her white neck very low,
Till at last even joy was annoyance,
Then she drank from the Chalice of
Woe.
She drank from the Chalice of
Laughter,
Joined in the plaudit of cheers;
She flirted, coquetted, then after,'
She drank from the Chalice of
Tears.
She drank from the Chalice of
Sorrow,
For love had been kindled too late.
Blanched, torn, alone on the
morrow,
Then she drank from the Chalice of
Fate
yard grass - are not controlled by
atrazine.
When you find these grasses,
you have to switch to a different
herbicide in combination with at
least one pound of atrazine. The
Chemicals are:'
1) Sutan — has, to be applied
preplant and immediately worked
into the soil with a disc. Discing
twice is best because it improves
the control.
2) Lasso -- both Lasso and Bled-
ex can be applied pre-emergence
3) Bladex -- or post emergence.
When applying either of these two
chemicals post-emergence, never '
do it when the corn has more
than 3 leaves and never add oil.
If you do add oil or spray too
late it could kill the corn crop.
There is another chemical - Ek-
ko - which is a combination of at-
razine and simazine. Used alone

or with oil, it does give good con-
trol of all annual grasses except
crab grass.
Using Sutan, Lasso or Bladex
at the recommended rates will
allow you to rotate into something
else next year. But with Ekko at
the recommended rate, you have
to stay in corn for at least an.
other year.
The use of any of these hell*
cides for 'one year sloes not get
rid of the weed problem. You will
have to use these chemicals for
a number of years.
It should be remembered that
Sutan, Lasso or Bladex will not
control twitch grass.
