No Smoking Is
Good hisurance
Waiting fora 'safe" cigarette?
There 'is no such thing as a' safe
cigarette = and little hope for one.
There is some evidence. that
'cigarettes with , lower tar • and
nicotine leyels may be less
hazardous than those with higher
levels. But anything that burns -
tobacco, lettuce, Kentucky blue-
grass - creates gases that assault
. the lungs.
Insurance companies know the
statistics. Some life insurers
provide discounts to people who
don't smoke, or offer lower rates to
nonsmokers for automobile, insur-
ance, homeowners insurance and
disability income insurance. Smok-
ers are involved 'in more traffic
accidents, cause more home fires,
and suffer greater disabilities than
nonsmokers.
The benefits of quitting smoking
can come quickly. One experiment
in Canada showed remarkable
improvements in lung function
after only six weeks of stopping
smoking. Sensitive tests showed
there had been a reversal of the
lung damage - blockage of, the
small breathing passages - done by
smoking. Even in one subject
who had smoked for 46 years.
PAGE NINETEEN
Stopping' smoking is not easy.
Owen Sound has had two smoke
withdrawal clinics in the past 'year,
and the results show that people
simply cannot' stop smoking as a
general rule. Twenty percent of
those enrolled is a good result
following ten' sessions of program.
• Zippy Trinettes

Garden Club was held in the Trinity
Church basement with 'eleven
members present. The leaders
. Mrs. Don Hackett and Mrs. Arnold
Campbell called the meeting to-
order and all members repeated

The election of officers took place
with results, as follows. President,
Cheryl Hackett; vice president,
Mary Anne Alton; secretary, Karen
Campbell; press reporter,' Lori
Hackett. We' decided to keep the
same name Zippy Trinettes.
Achievement Day will be the 3rd
week in August on a week day.
Members pamphlets, extra sheets
and information pamphlets' about
the project were handed out. The
leaders gave an outline of the
project including requirements for
the club and for individual mem-
bers. Each girl has to grow ten
vegetables and four flowers.
The leaders discussed with the
girls why grow a vegetable garden
and flowers, where to plant them,
how to sterilize soil for planting
seeds. Suggestions for subject
matter was discussed.
For group work we identified
pictures of vegetables and flowers.
The next meeting will be on May
6th at the Trinity Church base-
ment.
