Edmonton Funeral
For Lucknow Native LES PETTER SHOES
GORDON E. SMELTZER
•
Funeral services were held in
EdMonton for Gordon E. Smeltzer,
.78, Teal .estate and insurance 'man.
Mr. Smeltzer As born, raised
and educated in Lucknow area and
served in the First' World, War with
the 160th Bruce Battalion.
He was the son of Will Smeltzer
and Marcella • Reid. Gordon was
° born in Ashfield and attended
.
elementary school on the .9th of
Ashfield and at Belfast. He later
resided in Lucknow where his
father operated the Ford Garage.
Following • discharge from the'
armed services, he went west in
1919 and settled in Morrin,
Alberta, where he established a
real estate and insurance business.
.In 1920 he married the former
Bessie Stickney of Morrin'.
In 1928 the Smeltzers moved to
Edmonton and in a few years he
established his own business in the
city which developed into one of the
largest insurance agencies in
Northern Alberta. He served 'as
director of the Alberta Insurance
Agent's Association during its early
years.
From 1934 until the time of his
death, Mr. Smeltzer was a member'
of the, Edmonton Lions' Club and
served as president in 1937-38. He
was involved in the original
planning and development of the
Lions' Snnset Cottages for senior
citizens. He' was also' involved' in .
the Pee Wee. Hockey League in
F,Amonton which included taking
his turn at coaching.
Following the Second World War
Mr. Snaeltzer took a keen interest
in flying and by 1947 he had earned
his private flying licence..
He served on the board of
directors .for the Edmonton Flying.
Club and became a lifetime
member. He was also one of ' the
founder of Gateway Aviation. Ltd.
and remained active in its opera-
tion• until 1959. • Wheri he retired
from flying at the age of 72 the
records declared him' to be
Canada's second oldest registered
pilot.
Mr. Smeltzer was an ardent
golfer who continued his active
role in the sport until the time of his
death,. He was a member of the
Mayfair Golf Club' where he
competed annually in the senior
golf tournament. In 1960 he
emerged the winner; of the coveted
Judge Walsh Trophy.
His years of retirement were
spent in Jasper and Hollywood,
Florida. .
He is survived by his wife
Evelyn, of a second marriage, one
son, Keith and two daughters,
Mrs. R. (Helen) Williams and Mrs.
R. (Jeanne) Johnston all. of
Edmonton. There are seven
surviving grandchildren. /
Funeral service was conducted
by Rev. A.G.S. Edworthy, followed
by cremation.

approximately '13,000 cubic yards
of gravel, the ad to be placed in the
Daily Commercial News for one
week and to be submitted to the
Clerk or Road 'Superintendent by
Monday, March 31, 1975 at 6.00
p.m.
On Motion of Councillors Hickey
and Cranston the Road Superin-
tendent was authorized to advertise
for tenders for the supply of a road
grader, ad to be placed in the Daily
Commercial News, for two weeks,•
and tenders submitted by Monday,
March 31 at 6.00 p.m..
The Clerk was instructed to
contact Mr. Morris of the Ministry
of Treasury, EconoMics and Inter-
governinental Affairs' London of-
fice, in regard to a meeting with the
Village of Auburn trustees to set up
a proper system of administration
for the Village.
The road' accounts were ordered
paid on- motion of Councillors
Stothers and Cranston.
A motion by Councillors Foran
and Cranston authorized the Reeve
and Clerk to apply for a Supple- •
mentary Subsidy Allocation 'of
approximately $10,000.00.
By-law #5, 1975, was, given third ,
reading and finally passed on
motion of Councillors Stothers and
Foran. . •
This by-law authorizes the collec-:
tion of a special rate on Lots 16 and
17 concession 9 to cover tile
drainage loans.

Saturday presented a nice sun-
shine day for the big farm
• machinery sale held for George,and
Bob Emerson at Purple Grove on
the 12th concession east.
A year ago this winter Richard,
Edmiston retired from the Canad-
ian Armed Forces and, back from
Germany, moved into the former
Harry McAllister house across the
road from the Ripley Chopping
Mill. He purchased .the property
from Frank and Danielle Mattel
who moved to Tiverton. At present
he is doing some interior remodell-
ing for shortly he will be leaving on
a trip to Spain. This pait week Dick
informed us that he and Jean
McGuire of Montreal were married
on. Tuesday, February 25 in
Goderich by. Judge Carter. At
present his wife Jean is teatting at
St. Laurent, a suburb of Montreal.
She will finish her teaching career
there'at the end of April. Then Mr.
and Mrs. Edmiston will be in Spain
on May 30 on a• delayed honey-
moon. And at the same time they
will attend the wedding of his

week. The' Bruce County branch
recently met in. Walkerton and
Keith Weedon of Paisley, who is
chairman of the Ontario Board, was
officially appointed to represent
Bruce.

Mrs. Evelena Wyld is presently
visiting in California. This past
week Mr. and Mrs. John McRae of
Wayne, Michigan visited with Nora
and Niels Frederiksen in Ripley.
