Mrs. Ernie Pollock returned to
her home in Ripley last week after a
week's visit in Stratford with Mr.
and Mrs. Dawson Pollock and
family.

Back home after spending the
past few weeks in Kincardine
hospital is Miss Pat Fludder.

tion needed and our thanks to
them.
The Ripley Fire Department has
been reshuffled during the past two
months. The new chief succeeding
Doug Liddle is Ivan Cook,, with
John. D. MacKay deputy-chief;
secretary, John Dodds and pumper
captain, Bob Johnston. Firemen
are Doug Liddle, Rod MacDonald,
Clarence Pollock, Jack Scott, Ted
Rouse, Oraen Rock, Harvey Pol-
lock, George McLean, Ray Fuller,
Don Peterbaugh and Allan Irwin.
Honourary fire chief is Gordon
Scott. Retired from the Ripley Fire'
Department are Jack McLean,
Lloyd Wylds and Murray . Pollock.'
Two more men are to be appointed
at the next fire department meeting
- in all there are to be 16 men.

RIPLEY.WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
The Ripley Women's Institute
was held at the Ripley Legion Hall
at 1.30 with coffee and dessert.
Mrs. Harvey Evans favoured with a
couple of songs with Mrs. Violet
MacKenzie playing the piano.
There were drop cookies brought
to be judged And Mrs. Walter
Lock's were chosen.
The Institute is sponsoring
euchre every second Monday
night. Sewing with knits is to be in
the Township Hall, Ripley for those
who took Sewing with Knits. Mrs.
Reg Moore was resolution conven-
er and made a resolution which was
approved by the Institute and it is
to go on to District Level. A poem
"Country Kid" was quite interest-

The February meeting was held .
`at the home of Mrs. Kenneth
Cameron with 15 members and 1
visitor present. Mrs. Charles '
Anderson opened the 'meeting with
all singing' hymn, 38 followed by
prayer.
, The roll call was answered by the
members telling of the first church
they attended. The different
secretaries were called on for their
reports. The new mission study is
to be on "Missions Depend on
Yen". The Presbyterial meets at
Grace United Church,. Hanover on
February 28th. The next general
meeting will be on February 18th
under Community Friendship. An'.
invitation was received and accept-,
ed, to meet with the Presbyterian
Evening Auxiliary for their March
meeting.
The devotional part of the"
meeting was turned over to. Mrs.
Albert Morningstar. Mrs. Gordon
Johnstone read the scripture and
meditation followed by prayer by
Mrs. Ivan Conley.
Mrs. Morningstar introduced the
guest speaker Mrs. Lorne Sparks
who chose as her topic "Love".
Mrs. Johnstone thanked Mrs.
Sparks for her very interesting
message to us and the meeting
closed by repeating the b‘enedic-
tion. A social half hour followed.
Unit 3 UC.W.
Unit 3 of the Lucknow United
Church Women met at Pinecrest
Manor for their February meeting.
Mrs. Grace Campbell, who presid-
ed for the program, extended a
welcome to all members and guests
Dresent. Following the opening
.'ymn all repeated the Lord's
prayer. The theme of the pro-gram
was prayer and suitable scripture
was read by Mrs. Eldon Bradley.
Mrs. Eunice Dunsmuir sang a
pleasing solo "You hold the keys to
the Kingdom". The commentar34
on 'prayer' was given by Mrs. Ted
Rice. •
Mrs. Grace Campbell gave a
most interesting talk on the life of
the blind hymn-writer Fanny .Cros-
by, naming marry of her best-loved
hymns and the circumstances
under which they were written.
The hymni 'Rescue the perishing'.
and 'Safe in the arms of Jesus'
were sung and Mrs. Rice sang
"Some day the silver chord will
break" as a pleasing solo.
Mrs. Glen Walden then conduct-
ed the business meeting. She
made announcements regarding
the general meeting of the U.C.W.
on February 18 at 8 p.M., also the
Presbyterial at Grace United
Church, Hanover on Friday, Febru-
ary 28 at 10 a.m.. Those attending
are asked to 'bring a box lunch.
Twenty-three members answer-
ed the roll call by • naming their
favourite hymn. The friendship
convener reported on calls made
and cards sent to shut-ins. The
treasurer's report was given by
Mrs. Jean Jardine.
Following the benediction the
gathering assembled in the Crafts
Room •for a social hour .to honour
Mrs. Rosemary Thom, on the
occasif her 93rd birthday. After
singing Happy Birthday the com-
mittee, Mrs. Greta Rice, Mrs.,
Grace Campbell and Mrs. Eunice
Dunsmuir served delicious birth-
day cake, ice cream and tea.
Valentines were given and visits
made to the patients at Pinecrest
Manor.

The February meeting of the
Lucknow Presbyterian Women's
Missionary Society was held in the
PresbYterian Church on Wednes-
day, February 4th. Mrs. . Noble
Johnston .presiding, opened the •
meeting with a short reading and
prayer. After the singing • of a
hymn, the aim and purpose of the
W.M.S. was repeated in unison.
Mrs. Sherwood gave the Bible
Study, reading from Psalm 1. Mrs.
Robert Reid gaVe the Glad Tidings
review, and Mrs. Wm. Porteous
led in prayer.
Highlights of the Presbyterial
meeting held in VVingham, were
given by Mrs. James Little.
Announcement was made of the
Presbyterial to be held in Teeswat-
er, the Synodical meeting to be
held in St. Thomas April 8th and
9th and the Biennial Conference to
be held in St. Catharines April 25 -
27th. The allocation for Supply
money is $50.00.' Following the
offering, Mrs. Johnston gave the
offertory prayer.
Mrs. Kennedy read the minutes
of last meeting and called the roll.
19 ladies responded with a verse of
scripture.
An invitation was extended by
the Wingham W.M.S. to attend the
display of W.M.S. banners on
February 25th and 27th and March
1st and 2nd in the church there.
A fee of 25c from each member
was collected for the presbyterial
fund.
World Day of Prayer will be
observed on March 1th in South
Kinloss Church. Mrs. Glenn Noble
gave the Mission Study telling of
the Urban Ministry, the children's
work in Tyndal House, Montreal;
the Korean Christian Centre in
Osaka, Japan; the work, in Port
Harcourt, Africa' and the work at
Erin Mills; 4 different types of.
Mission.
Following the singing of a hymn,
Mrs. Jaines Little closed the
meeting with ,prayer.

W.M.S.
Mrs. Lloyd MacDougall was.
hostess for the regular meeting of
the South Kinloss Women's Mis-
sionary Society on .February Sth.
Mrs. Dickie opened the meeting by
reading a poem* "Remember
This". The hymn "I am Thine, 0
Lord" was sung and the. Lord's
prayer repeated in unison.
Mrs. Frank MacKenzie read a
poem "Give me a Faith". Mrs.
Donald Robertson is to be guest
speaker for the World Day of
Prayer on March 1st. An invitation
was -extended to see the display of
Centennial Banners in St. And-
rew's Presbyterian church, Wing-
ham on February 25 and 27 and
March 1 and 2.
"What a friend we have in
Jesus" was sung. Mrs. Sparks
took the Bible Study on I john,
chapters 1 and 2. 'Each member
did a crossword puzzle prepared by
the directors on the Bible Study. .
Mrs. Dickie gave a report of the
Presbyterial held in Wingham.
The roll call was answered by 13
members ARI. 2 visitors. Mrs.
Frank MacKenzie read from the.
Bible Society Newsletter, the story
of Rev. Clare McGill completing•
the translation of the New Testa-
ment into the Tayal language.
Mrs. Frank MacKenzie gave the
courtesy remarks. Breathe on me,
breath of God was sung and Mrs.
Sparks closed the meeting With
prayer. Grace was sung and lunch
was served by the hostess and
directors.

Women was held in the church
parlour. Mrs. Vernon Hunter
presided and welcomed 16 mem-
bers to the 'meeting.
Hymn 488 was sung followed by
prayer by Mrs 'Hunter and the
Lord's'prayer repeated in unisbn.
Mrs, Hunter read "The Glory of
Winter". The roll call was answer.

Mrs. Eldon Henderson convened
the program which opened with.

the scripture and gave the medita-
tion followed by prayer by Mrs.
Cardis. Miss Helen Thompson and
Mrs. Harvey Houston sang a duet
accompanied by Mrs. • Raynard
Ackert. Mrs. Garf MacDonald
gave a reading "To see' ourselves
as others do". Hymn 445 was sung
and, Mrs. Magoffin read "Do
something for somebody". .
Mrs. Andrew Gaunt showed
slides and spoke on her trip to the
Holy Land ending with a poeM "I
„walked today- where Jesus walk-
ed".
Mrs. Houston thanked the
speaker and Mrs. Henderson pres-
ented her with a gift. , The meeting
closed with the mizpah benedic-
tion.

Unit 1 of Lucknow United Church
Wornen held their regular meeting
on Tuesday. afternoon, February
4th in the fellowship room at the
church. Mrs. Jas. Wraith, assist-
ant leader, opened, the meeting
with a verse, the Spring Crocus"
followed by prayer.
There were sixteen Y members
present answering the roll call with'
payment of fees. The treasurer's '
_report was given by Mrs. Pete
Cook. Mrs. Walter Dexter gave the
report on community, friendship
and visits to, shut ins. Mrs.
Clarence Irwin gaire a reading on
Stewardship.
It was announced the Presbytery
would be held in Hanover on
February 28th; also to keep in mind
the musical "It's Cool in the
Furnace" to be put on by Ripley
Young People. There will be
spoons and pins available this year
in commemoration of the 50th
anniversary of church union.
Mrs. Bob Helm led the devotion-
al and the committee' chose the
theme New life, New Spirit, New
Year.
The program was opened with
the hymn "What a friend we have
in Jesus", _followed by prayer.
Mrs. Clarence Irwin read the
scripture and gave the meditation
saying, God is the potter, we are
the clay. The potter, not the clay
will choose the shape. We should
be more willing to trust the potter
to shape our lives. We enjoyed a
vocal solo from Mrs. de Boer who
sang 'My faith looks up to Thee'.
Mrs. Al Irwin gave a paper on
the theme of the program. As' we
cross over the threshhold of writing
a chapter in the book 'of life, we
should remember that the year is
made up of single days, meant to
stand by themselves and that every
morning is a chance to begin again.
Mrs. Marshal Gibson gave a
reading "Help" and Mrs. Al Irwin
conducted a" Bible contest. We
closed with hymn 500. Lunch was
served by the' committee, Mrs. Al,
Irwin, Mrs. Bob Helm and Mrs:
Clarence Irwin.

Mrs. Sam Geddes got the lucky
chair prize and Mrs. Wm. Courtney
found a valentine under her plate
and she received a prize.- Mrs.
'Donnie MacDonald gave the court-
esy remarks.
Mrs. Elsie (E.O.) Forrester of
Ripley, along with her daughter
Mrs. Barber of Oshawa, travelled
to Los Angeles and from there into
Mexico where they are spending a
couple of weeks. - On' their return
they will spend the last part of the
vacation with Mrs. Forrester's son
in the San Francisco Bay area.

Last Wednesday, John FL Mac-
Donald passed away in his 86th
year in the Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital in Goderich. He
has resided in Goderich for a
number of years after retiring froth
the family homestead on the fourth
concession east in Huron Town-ship
'where Mr. and Mrs. Peter van Dam
now. live. The funeral service was
held last Friday afternoon with
interment in Maitland ' Cemetery,
Goderich. Sympathy of Ripley area
friends go to the family.
Mrs. Evelena Wyld and her
grandson John Wyld visited over
the week end with Niels and Nora
Frederiksen, Mrs. Minnie Wyld
and at the Allan Wyld farm on the
sixth concession. On Monday they
returned to Weston.
