Buying and borrowing can sometimes
cause problems.
This is what Ontario is doing
to protect you. '
There are basic common sense rules for
buying and selling. Unfortunately, people
don't always know these rules or follow
them, and that allows unscrupulous sellers
to take advantage of people.
Common sense is your best defence. But
You have another defender, too. Two pieces
of legislation have been passed by your On-
tario Government in order to help you.
The Consumer Protection Act is designed
to profect you from problems that may arise
when you buy goods or services, or borrow
money. It is administered by the Consumer
Protection Bureau, which also handles
. complaints and inquiries about question-
able business practices, and it controls:
• registration of itinerant sellert (i.e., .door-
to-door salesmen) '
• ,contracts Over $50 where delive-rY of
goods, services or payment ha's not been
completed
full disclosure of credit terms
• special discounts for' getting friends to
buy (referral selling)
• unsolicited goods (including unsolicited
credit cards)
• false or misleading advertising
• penalties for offences
The Consumer Reporting. Act is another law
designed to protect you. It gives you the
right to know what credit and personal in-
formation about you is on. file with corn- •
panies, and an opportunity to have inaccu-
racies corrected, and , prohibits consumer,
reporting agencieS from using information.
unless' it is stored in Canada. According to
this Act, you are entitled to request in writ-
ing that the contents of yoUr file and the
sources of information be disclosed to you.
Your Ontario Government has: also pre-
pared two easy-to-understand booklets
that describe the Consumer Protection Act
and the Consumer Reporting Act. The book-
lets explain these two important Ontario
laws more fully.

Recently pictured in the "Daily
Calendar" for January, published
in California, were Mr., and Mrs.
Eugene Martyn of Kincardine..
This paper is published monthly in
Bernet. Eugene and Anne Martyn
were chosen as "King and Queen"
candidates from Hemet Valley.
There were also seven other
couples picked representing other
nearby clubs and communities,.
Then on January 28 there vvas a big
day ,at the Loomis • Hall and
Fairgrounds in Hemet when the
King and Queen were to be
selected. Each set of candidates
was driven to the park in an antique
car and Mr. and Mrs. Martyn rode
in a 1915 Ford. This was the first
annual, "Winter Visitor Apprecia-
tion Day" program.
In the picture. Anne and Eugene
were wearing plaid "wedgy" hats -
appeared to be the Bruce tartan.
Also in their letter to Mrs.
Margaret (Donald) Blue of Ripley,
Mrs. Martyn says that they will be
doing .a solo waltz with Lawrence
Welk's band. This is some honour
, - just wonderful to be on the' show
with "Mr. VVunnerful" hiMself.
All the folks of this area offer Mr.
and Mrs. Eugene Martyn congratu-
lations on being so honouied in
California where they are on their
yearly vacation and on bringing
notice and honour to Ontario and
Canada. Our thanks goes to Mrs.
Margaret: Blue for this information
and our personal congratulations to
Mr. and Mrs. Martyn...

with the two year old Champion
Clydesdale stallion. This horse is
owned by' the Quebec Clydesdale
