The Citizen, 2000-12-13, Page 3FROM BLYTH THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2000. PAGE 3, Scouting groups make best of the season I knew it was too good to be true! Last week Old Man Winter returned to our area and with him lots of snow accumulated again. This did not stop dedicated people though. On Monday, Dec. 4 there were enough people present for five tables of euchre in Bainton’s Art Gallery. The high lady for the evening was Frances Clark while Al Donaldson was the high scoring man. Mary Turnbull and Elliot Lapp earned the most lone hands, while Ruth Shiell and Charlie had the low scored for the night. Please keep in mind that due to the poor weather last week the monthly Diner’s meal had been can celled for the second time this month. Plan to attend the Christmas meal this Friday at noon at the Blyth Anglican Church. OH OH OH, let’s hope the weath er co-operates this time. KATHY’S QUOTE OF THE WEEK: No one stands so tall as Before the break for the Christmas holiday 1st Blyth Scouting is mak ing the best of the festive season. On Dec. 1 there was a good turnout for the Blyth Santa Claus parade. Beavers and Cubs rode on the float, while the Scouts gathered many donations for the food bank along the route. Enough food was gathered to fill a canoe. On behalf of the youth and leaders involved the Group Committee expressed sincere appreciation to Grant Sparling for the use of his flat bed trailer, to Great Western Resources for the use of the truck, to Allan Peel for the straw bales, and to Gerald Hakkers for expertly and safely driving such a valuable cargo in the parade. It was a fun experi ence for all those involved. Due to stormy weather the Beaver and Cub meetings were cancelled Dec. 5. On Dec. 12 the Beavers planned to tour the mam street of Blyth to judge for themselves which businesses have the best window decorations. The Cubs have already toured downtown Blyth on an alphabet tour. For each letter of the alphabet each team had to find something which started with that letter. This popular activity always tests their observa tion skills and demonstrates the ingenuity of the youth. As a group the Scouts are covering the non-denominational require ments for the Religion-In-Life badge with Rev. Ernest Dow. In this way youth from a variety of denomina tions, and some who are not associ ated with any particular church can benefit. On Dec. 12 they are planning to go swimming at Vanastra. In the new year the troop is planning to have a winter camp. For those Scouts who are planning to go to the Canadian Jamboree in Prince Edward Island plans are being finalized for trans portation, and fundraising is going well. Because the 1st Blyth Venturers program has a close association with the OPP through their advisors they have been gaining insight, and par ticipating in new experiences associ ated with policing. They have already learned about identification, finger printing, and tactical rescuing. In the new year they are planning to visit the Police College Training Centre, learn about firearms safety, and participate in a mock court ses sion. On Nov. 24-26 weekend, three 1st Blyth Scouters and one Junior Leader attended the Huron District Woodbadge I Training Course at St. Boniface School in Zurich. Shari Cartwright took the Administrative, Fred Hakkers took Colony, and Gerald and Jesse Hakkers took troop training. This is not only a requirement for new lead ers, but provides a lot of insight, good ideas, and valuable resources for anyone who is involved with Scouting. In the second major fundraiser of the year the Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts sold $2,424 of Trails End Scout Popcorn. Of that $1,478.15 will be profit, to be used for Scouting expenses at the local level. Initial plans for Scout-Guide Week were discussed at the Dec. 4 Group Committee meeting. In celebration of Lord Baden-Powell’s birthday both Scouting and Guiding members will attend a Church service on Sunday, Feb. 18 and participate in a family potluck banquet Feb. 21.
