The Citizen-39Th Annual Reunion, 2000-09-06, Page 36PAGE A-16. THE CITIZEN. WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 6. 2000. Sawmill a popular attraction at Reunion was like 50-100 years ago, is run complete ly by steam engines, I0 in all, which come from Lucknow, Auburn, Moorefield, Mitchel), St. Thbmas, London and includes two Sawyer Masseys from Watford. The engines used range in horsepower from 10-75. They have great lugging power and each size is useful for specific woods. The I0 hp is used for softwoods and the 75 hp is used for beech logs. The logs are sawed to rough lumber and are then used for the construction of furni ture. There is no waste with a steam pow- ered sawmill because the scrap wood is then used to fire the engine. The mill used by the Threshers was donated to the club more than 20 years ago. It has an all-steel track and cuts nice and true. The mill has a 54 inch blade and an edger for edging the logs. The sawmill will be set up near the steam engines display area, in the central section of the park. THE CUTTING EDGE A pooular attraction at the Reunion is the antique sawmill with a 54-inch blade. The engines used range in horsepower from 10-75, with the lowest being for soft woods and the top end for beech logs. The sawmill is set up in the central section It is a sight for both young and old as the huge blade begins to whir and the logs are stripped of their bark. Each September, the members of the thresher reunion haul the steam powered sawmill out of storage and spend a couple of days reassembling and oiling the equip ment and sharpening the blade. A group gathers a few days before the event to put the machine together because it has to be dismantled and put in storage after the annual show. The belts and blades are removed for the safety of children playing in the area throughout the year.
