Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast and gets a good night's rest before school. 2. Make learning a part of your daily routine outside of the classroom or preschool. Listen to educational songs or stories in the car. 3. Make homework a regularly scheduled activity. Children who get into the habit of always sitting down at the same place at the same time develop good study habits. Even children in preschool or who haven’t any assigned homework to do can benefit from sitting down to read a book, without distractions, at a prearranged time a few nights a week. 4. Encourage your child to notice written numbers - street addresses, licence plates and days on the calendar. This reinforces the fact that numbers are a part of daily life. 5. Help your child realize the importance of math by giving him practical mental tasks that relate to day-to-day living. 6. Play games with your child. Pull out a box of blocks - not for building but to talk about area, size, space, shape and dimension. 7. New readers need to be able to break words down into individual sounds in order to begin to sound out and spell. Cassette/book kits can be a big help in this area as students have fun and practise reading at the same time. Music lessons can help kids to refine their listening skills. 8. Keep reading to your child even after she has learned to read by herself. That way, you can expose her to more complex vocabulary and language structure. 9. Rhymes and chants are great memory boosters - and it’s a fun way to learn! 10. Songs are an easy way to introduce and practise counting - forwards and backwards. Try practising together each time you climb stairs. Sara Jordan is a former teacher and leading Canadian publisher of educational, children s audio.
