Obituaries Jan van Vliet of RR2, Brussels passed away at London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus on Friday, Aug. 25, 2000. He was in his 70th year. Born in Giessendam, The Netherlands on July 4, 1931, Jan was the son of Jan and Jaantje van Vliet. In November of 1949, Jan came to Canada with his parents and three of his five sisters. They were sponsored by the Turnbull family. On May 25, 1957, Jan married Joyce Thomas and had four children, John, Debbie, Janis and Joyanne. Jan and his family farmed on the 16th of Grey Twp., where they oper­ ated a purebred swine operation. One of the highlights of his working years was showing and judging prize-winning swine at exhibitions across Canada. On Oct. 26, 1989, Jan’s wife Joyce passed away. In 1991 he married Joan Thomas. Jan gained another daughter, Shelley and son Duane. Jan and Joan enjoyed 10 grandchil­ dren in all. Jan was an avid member of the Brussels Lions*Club and enjoyed seeing the community benefit from its projects. Jan was also a past pres­ ident of the Ontario Pork Congress and the Canadian Swine Breeders Association. During his retirement years, Jan enjoyed many coffees with his friends at (he coffee shop. Jan will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Joan and by his chil­ dren John van Vliet and his wife Diane of RR1, Walton, Debbie Claessens and her husband Frank of Milton, Janis McCooey and her hus band Brian of Fort Erie and Joyanne Derreck and her husband Duane of St. Catharines. He was the dear stepfather of Shelley Miller and her husband Lawrence of Listowel and Duane Edgar of Red Deer, Alberta. He was the dear brother of Mary van Dyke and her husband Adrie of the Netherlands, Pieta Cousins and her Paul Henderson headlines Arthritis Society breakfast Hockey Great Paul Henderson headlines The Arthritis Society’s Annual Celebrity Breakfast on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Henderson will be the guest speaker at The Arthritis Society’s Celebrity Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the Embassy Room at Bingeman Park in Kitchener, hosted by Neil Aitchison. On Sept. 28, 1972 at Moscow, Team Canada defeated The Soviet Union six to five in the eighth game. In game 7 Henderson scored the husband Lawrie of London, and Corrie Hamelin of Penetanguishene and beloved grandpa of 10. Jan was predeceased by his first wife Joyce, his mother and father and two sisters. Friends were received by the fam­ ily from 7 - 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 - 4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, Brussels where the funeral service was conducted from the chapel on Monday, Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bonnie Cole-Arnal officiating. Sharing their memories of Jan were his friends Doug Lawless and Neil McGavin. Graeme Craig provided musical solos of How Great Thou Art and Amazing Grace. Carrying floral tributes were grandchildren Jennifer Claessens, Michelle Claessens, Amanda McCooey, Meghan McCooey, Aleshia Miller, Matthew Claessens, Brett Miller, Andrew van Vliet, Kyle McCooey and Justin Miller. winning goal with two minutes remaining and now in this final game he did it again, this time with only 34 seconds remaining - to win the series. There may be and there have been, other series, and Canada may win them - but, there will never be another series like that first one - a truly great Canadian happening. Honorary pall­ bearers were Don Fraser and Wallace Bell. Interment was in the Brussels Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Brussels Lions Club, Community Care Access for Huron, the Canadian Cancer Society, Duff’s United Church or the charity of one’s choice. BEAULAH KEDDY Mrs. Beaulah Keddy of RR4, Seaforth, passed away at London Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000 in her 63rd year. She was the beloved wife of Robert Keddy and loving mother of Hugh Keddy and wife Amanda of Alberta, Terry Keddy and wife Cheree of Walkerton, Mark Keddy of Guelph and Larry Garnett of Toronto. She was the cherished grandmother of eight grandchildren. Mrs. Keddy was the loved daugh­ ter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Alphie Gaudett and the late Hugh Keddy of Nova Scotia, sister-in-law of Dorothy Rhynard of Seaforth and Ken Rhynard of Clinton and Jim and Dianne Yates of Brantford. She will also be remembered by several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Friday, Aug. 25 at the Whitney-Ribey Funeral Home, Seaforth followed by cremation. Pallbearers were Robert Keddy, Hugh and Terry Keddy, Bill and Bob Rhynard, Brian Mason and Ron Stokes. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation through the funeral home.
