The Citizen, 2000-08-30, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2000. FROM BRUSSELS Lee from Huronlea By I ,ee Chesterfield Shirley Wood's last day at Huronlea will be Thursday, Aug. 3 I. To say she will be missed is an understatement. Talking about Shirley usually started with the same thought: “She is cheerful and always helpful". Someone said “She keeps her own council". Another said with a chuck le “when she retires she should start a repair shop. She can fix any office machine ever made.” Celebrant Retta Hoover celebrated her 90th birthday with an open house celebration at Huronlea in Brussels on Sunday after noon . (Vicky Bremner photo) Shirley’s office door was always open. If you had a problem she helped you solve it. If you had a complaint she listened. When you left her you knew it would be reme died. If you had been ill and hospi talized she welcomed you back with a smile and words of encourage ment. Shirley and Darrell Wood and their children left the noise and confusion of Toronto 26 years ago to return to the home farm. They had owned and run a nursing home in Toronto’s east end and were glad to be back in rural Ontario. Things might not always run smoothly, but at least it would be quieter! Shirley started at Huronview Nursing Home as a RNA and then was made admissions co-ordinator. She assumed that position at Huronlea in April 1993 and later took on the added duties of secretary and time-replacement co-ordinator. Whatever the position she per formed it admirably and so it is with regret that we say goodbye but we wish her all the best. She and her husband plan to travel in their mobile home and if they have any motor problems - not to worry - Shirley will fix them. Euretta Emma Aug. 29, 1910 to Smith of Bluevale and later Cone. 2 of Morris Twp. She was educated at Bluevale and Browntown Public Schools. She worked as a clerk at the MacTavish General Store in Brussels. Then on July II, 1935 she married Norman Stanley Hooverand together they raised five children, John (deceased 1998), Murray of Grey Twp., Marian (Eadie) of RR2, Wingham, Glen (deceased 1994) and Sylvia (Gibson) of Wingham. The family today includes six grandchil dren. Mrs. Hoover is a 65-year member of the Brussels United Church where she has been active in both the choir and the UCW. She is also the only living Charter member of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge in Brussels. Throughout her life, Mrs. Hoover has enjoyed gardening and tending bom Lucy to her flowers. She still enjoys read ing, Huronlea bingo, listening to music, watching The Lawrence Welk Show on television and the friend ship of her loving cat of 12 years, Ginger. Mrs. Hoover was the first occupant of the Highland Apartments at Huronlea. Out-of-town guests attending the celebration at Huronlea were from London, Cambridge, Kitchener, St. Thomas, Mi Iton, Wingham, Plattsville and Lucknow. Well the holidays are over. Of course the weather is improving and the kids are making plans for school. So long August! Retta Hoover was the guest of honour as family and friends toasted 90 years of a good life on Sunday. Remember Jack and Marg Brewer - good Legion members until the 80s? Their granddaughter Sarah, youngest child of Cliff and Joan (MacFarlane), was married last Saturday at Deep River. Old friends Kathy and Frank Workman and Betty and Ralph Watson enjoyed the wedding on their lawn right on the Ottawa River - terrific scenery. Sheila Richards has enjoyed cot tage life in the Muskoka area catch ing up with her sons and their fami lies and friends in the beauty of Fairy Lake. My Alberta holiday was great. Jeff Boynton was married in Black Diamond with a reception in Longview, so it was nice to check southern Alberta. Ralph enjoyed High River which has at least 15 murals which cover entire walis. They have been doing murals with a history base since the 1990s. It’s a nice walk about. While being tourists at Lake Louise we rented a canoe and while being helped into the canoe - a sweet voice said, “Hello Betty”. What a nice surprise to see Heather Douma at her summer job. She told us she gets The Citizen so “Hello Heather - see you in the fall.” Enjoy Labour Day weekend. Bye now, Betty G. W. Check out our WEBSITE at www.northhuron.on.ca GOiMO.
