Early bird teachers prepare by honing skills for new year The Avon Maitland District School Board is preparing for the new school year which begins on Sept. 5. During the week of Aug. 28, 285 teachers, occasional teachers, principals, vice-principals and educational assistants have booked 561 spots in early bird work shops (many have booked more than one workshop) to hone their teaching skills and learn more about the ongoing changes to the curriculum. Twenty-eight different workshops will be offered on subjects ranging from Reading Strategies, Making Math Manageable, Dramitic Ideas, to Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. Presenters are experts in their fields, coming from universities, other school boards, the public and private sector, as well as from within the Avon Maitland District School Boards. Workshops will take place at the Administrative Office in Seaforth, Seaforth Public School and Seaforth District High School. Professional activity days are limited to four during the school year. In elementary schools, two days are used for parent-teacher interviews, one for year-end turn around and one for professional development. In secondary schools, three days are used for end-of-year marking and promotion meetings, and one for teacher professional development. Director ot Education Lome Rachlis said. “I am pleased to see a large number of teachers taking advantage of the early bird workshops being offered. Many teachers take courses during the summer break and here is another example of the dedication of our teachers to being well prepared for promoting learning skills in their students.” Almost all teacher professional development occurs outside school hours. Implementation of the new curriculum continues to pose challenges for teachers as they develop the methods required to meet the changed demands. Professional development activities help with the skills required and, by pulling teachers together, increase the opportunities for teachers to share methods and ideas that work in the classroom.
