Mrs. Smith hosts PEOPLE AROUND ETHEL May WMS FROM CRANBROOK In mid-May the ladies from the WMS from Cranbrook met at the home of Mrs. Joe Smith. Mrs. Stewart Steiss led the meeting and honoured mothers in her message. The origin of Mother’s Day was dis­ cussed including the retail slant with the strong sales of Howers, candy and greetings cards. Scripture was read from Proverbs 31: 10-31, followed by a reading “Is there a Mother in the House”. This stressed the importance of the moth­ er creating a Christian family. Mrs. Steiss led in prayer. Mrs. Stewart Stevenson called for the reading of the minutes by Mrs. Leslie Knight and the review of the treasurer’s report by Mrs. Jack Knight. The topic was given by Mrs. Brenda Perrie and dealt .with “Missions and Partnerships” in the meeting church. Ministers in groups of four might break up their work in this manner. One would visit the sickand. the elderly. Another would take the responsibility for youth and child education while another would do the preaching of the Gospel. The fourth would work with the Presbyterial and Synodical boards. The Food Grains Bank in this region depends on contributions of money and an effort from various surrounding churches working together. Sunday school children are filling shoe boxes with*heeded articles to be shipped to far off places where they are much needed. The party was held at the Cranbrook Community Centre and was a great success! The community congratulates Leslie and Yvonne Knight. They won the grand prize at the Brussels Lions Club Elimination Draw. Many people in Cranbrook supported the Lions Club event. It is one of the local clubs whose good works are seen in improving situations in the community. Business Di Congratulations Isabelle and Bob Bremner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house at -Grey Central school on Sunday. (Vicky Bremnerphoto) Bremners mark 50th An open house was held at Grey Central Public School on Sunday, May 28 to honour Bob and Isabelle Bremner on their golden wedding anniversary. The former Isabelle McMichael and her groom were wed May 27, 1959 at the Brussels United Church manse by Rev. Andrew Lane. The bride was attended by her sister, Marie McMichael (Davidson) while William Bremner, the groom’s brother acted as his attendant. Following a honeymoon trip to northern Ontario, the Bremners returned to farm at Cone. 4 in Grey Twp. where they remained for 25 years. They moved to Ethel in 1975 and were custodians at Grey Central school until 1988. Isabelle has been a 4-H leader for many years and a member of Molesworth Women’s Institute for over 50 years. Bob is a former mem­ bers of the Brussels Pipe Band and sang in the church choir for 55 years. He is also a former member of the Canadian Foresters. The couple has six daughters, Joan (Mrs. John) Morgan, Ilderton; Brenda (Mrs. Fred) Phillips, Lucknow; Kathryn (Mrs. Maurice) Nesbitt, Southwold; Mary (Mrs. Karl) Raszmann, Monkton; Donna and friend Ron Yarema, Winnipeg and Karen (Mrs. Nolan) Wettlaufer, Tavistock. Their family has grown to include 13 grandchildren. Sunday’s celebration was followed by a family dinner at the Bremner’s home at 70 Main St., Ethel. Congratulations to Isabelle and Bob Bremner on their 50th wedding anniversary which was celebrated with an open house at Grey Central school on May 28 Bob and Isabelle were caretakers at the school for many years. Drug bust in Hullett On May 24 shortly after 4 p.m. officers executed a drug warrant at a home in the village of Kinbum in Hullett Twp. Officers had received information that a number of mari­ juana plants were being grown inside the house. Some of the new plants were found in an upper bedroom while the established plants were growing in the basement. The plants are valued at $71,500. The officers also seized over $2,000 of growing equipment that was being used in the production of the plants.
