Entertainment & Leisure for kids Fun at Doon Theatre review Drama Guild does it all well in Tame’ The fifth annual Waterloo Wellington Children’s Ground water Festival to be held at Doon Heritage Crossroads, Monday, May 29 through Friday, June 2 is a fun and educational event that teaches children about the role of water in society. Children in Grades 3 through 6 have the opportunity of experiencing first-hand the manage ment of local resources. There are 40 activity centres that teach chil dren about conserving water, pro tecting our water resources, under standing the water cycle, and foster ing respect toward water and the environment. On stage Melina Hussey played Carmen Diaz in the F.E. Madill Drama Guild’s production of Fame, the Musical, last week. Several area students were involved in the production which played to a sold-out house three nights out of four. Teenage angst While Justin Ruttan as Joe expounds on the beauty of Carmen, the mor% restrained Nick played by Jay Sanders looks on. Bv Sarah Mann Special to The Citizen As the high energy, opening num ber of Fame explains: “ACTING, is the hardest profession in the world, the hardest profession is - DANC ING, is the hardest profession in the world, the hardest profession is - MUSIC, is the hardest profession in the world...” Acting, dancing and music are all tough professions and the F.E. Madill Drama Guild proved once again they can do all three very well. Fame - The Musical, was present ed in the small gym this year due to problems in the large gym. Despite seating and stage restrictions the show was amazing. Fame follows the last class to graduate from the “old” High School of Performing Arts on 46th Street from first audi tion to graduation. The cast is split into four groups playing actors, dancers, musicians and teachers. The actors, Serena Katz, Nick Piazzra and Joe (Jose) Vegas were played by Angela Chippa, Jay Sanders and Justin Ruttan. The dancers, Carmen Diaz, Tyrone Jackson, Iris Kelly and Mabel Washington were portrayed by Melina Hussey, Arras Hopkins, Heather Sande, and Ashley Gropp. The musicians, - Schlomo Metzenbaum, Grace Lamb (Lamb Chops) and Goodman King were played by Gelan Hopkins, Mandy Sellers and Joshua Gropp, who was also the pit band conductor. The teachers, Miss Sherman (English), Miss Bell (Dance), Mr. Sheinkopf (music), and Mr. Myers (Drama) were performed by Jackie Falconer, Heather Lane, Tyson de Boer and John Flemming, respec tively. Fame shows the ups and downs of being a teenager in the 1980s while going to PA, but the issues and prob lems they encounter still ring true today. Carmen had a drug addiction and ends up killing herself, Serena was convinced that Nick was gay, Mabel, thought she was the “world’s fattest dancer” and Tyrone couldn’t read. The realistic four years were presented by Madill’s talented actors and their powerful voices. The set was not elaborate yet it was effective and the costumes gave the audience a frightening trip back to the big hair and bright clothes of the 1980s. The production of Fame, directed by Ms Alexander, was the perfect showcase of the talent at Madill. It was very evident that there was much preparation and hard work put into the musical. Despite electrical problems due to the thunderstorm at Friday night’s performance, the cast and crew knew that “the show must go on” and the result was a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience. Congratulations*to the F. E. Madill Drama Guild for once again treating the audience to a wonderful produc tion.
