FROM BRUSSELS News from the NEWS Branch of By JoAnn McDonald Well, the new executive Brussels Legion Branch 218 was installed in a joint installation serv­ ice with Seaforth Branch 156 last Friday night. Many of the positions have remained the same with a few changes. New to the executive is Comrade Mabel Glanville. We wel­ come her and thank her for taking an active interest in how the Legion is run. Stepping into the vacant second vice president position is Comrade Mike Vader moving from the execu­ tive member position. Also moving from assistant secretary to secretary was Comrade JoAnn McDonald. There are chairman positions of various committees still to be filled and anyone wishing to become more familiar with the Branch is asked to contact President Linda Bird at 887- 6552 or the Branch. Euchre was held Saturday with 13 tables of enthusiastic players. The first place winners were Lloyd and Lillian Appleby. Tied for second place were pairs Harvey Edgar and Ed Stewart and Gord and Louise Bosman. The third place winners were Irene Sellers and Marie Stewart. Lone hand winners were Mary Davidson and Jim Smith. Several door prizes were given away also. The single dance crowd enjoyed the music of Tiffins Orchestra and enjoyed a special lunch because of Mother’s Day. The Mother’s Day breakfast was a wonderful success with a large crowd enjoying taking Mother out for breakfast. The showing of the unveiling of Canada’s National War Memorial is Sunday, May 28 at 1:30 p.m. Watch it at home or at the Branch with your fellow comrades. Tea with grandma Little Brookelynn Bos had a seat of honour on Great­ Grandma Pat Hunking’s lap as several members of Great- Great-Grandma Sarah Anderson’s family gathered at Huronlea in Brussels to mark Mother’s Day with a tea, May 12. Well, how is your mother? I hope you remembered Mother’s Day with a call or visit. I’m sure you already know there’s nothing more danger­ ous than a miffed mother. There were lots of folk in the vil­ lage celebrating family and love on the weekend. The high school crew at F.E. Madill had a successful run of the musical Fame. The hard work and practice was evident and we salute the Brussels talent, actors Justin Ruttan, Ashley Gropp and Mandy Sellers, pit conductor and lead gui­ tarist Joshua Gropp and chorus member Tricia Teeft. Hello Laura Smith. Sorry about your hip, St. John Ambulance volunteers, co-ordinated by Deb Trollope, spent Sunday supervising the health and safety of the Walton Motocross par­ ticipants. St. John is co-ordinating a blood donor clinic on June 20 at the arena. You’re eligible to give the “gift of life” if you’re between 17 and 71. Mark that day to share life. Queen Victoria, a descendant of Joan Jacobs, was seen smiling on Saturday at the United Church. Nominate that special person for the 14th Annual Citizen Citizenship Awards. Each year a committee chooses an outstanding citizen from each of the Blyth and area and Brussels and area communities to receive an award for contribution to the community. Kindergartens have been playing with puzzles and made teddy bears for Mother’s Day. Grade is have been making cool cars. In art they made cards for Mothers Day. They had lots of exer­ cise from walking all over for pitch­ in day. Grade 2s are doing a play called / Wish I were a butterfly. Grade 3s had a party to celebrate the end of the testing. Grade 4s have been working on measurement. In French they made their own island and in spelling they played a tortoise and the hare game. Grade 5/6s are making electrical cars for science. They made wind­ chimes for Mother’s Day. The Grade 5/6s made children’s stories. The Grade 6s are having Grade 6 testing this week. Grade 6/7s are making ecosys­ tems. The Grade 6s are doing .Grade 6 testing and practising track and field. Grade 8s are at Knechtel’s fundraising for graduation and put- the for for IN THE BANK!!!
