The Citizen, 2000-05-10, Page 31Changes coming to hospital services By Jim Brown Advance-Times Pat Pietrek of the Wingham and District Hospital Leadership Team told the May meeting of the hospital board that significant changes are going to be make in the delivery of outpatient laboratory and diagnostic imaging services to the public. She noted this is being implement ed as part of the cost-reduction strategies to assist in preparing a bal anced operating plan and will made the outpatient services more effi cient. Pietrek also stressed that every effort is being made to ensure that family members take patients to rou tine diagnostic, assessment and for follow up appointments at other facilities. According to Pietrek, this will decrease the costs of ambulance Physician shortage still plagues hospital By Jim Brown Advance-Times With $22 billion allocated for health in last week’s provincial budget, Site Administrator Margret Comack told the May meeting of the Wingham and District Hospital Board that $4 million for free tuition to medical students willing to prac tise in rural and northern areas is really not enough money. Comack said there is a huge process involved and that $4 million is not a large amount of money when looking at the whole picture. However, she noted, increasing the number of spaces for medical stu dents is a positive step. According to Comack, the eight hospitals in the Huron-Perth partner ship are looking at ways to standard ize their operational techniques. She said this would not cut servic es, but would instead optimize them. By standardizing the techniques at the hospitals, they will become more efficient. She pointed out Wingham is the only hospital in the partnership that is open on Saturday for outpatient services. Comack said they also will be reviewing the activities and work processes in the laboratory at the hospital. “We have been exploring a num ber of issues under Nancy Brown’s leadership as we have deliberated on the budget challenges,” she said. Since the Wingham hospital is now an active member of the IHLP, this is an opportunity to benefit from an outside perspective on the scope and process of some of the hospital’s services. Comack said Dr. Malcolm Carlson and Graerne ^Johnston, who direct the IHLP, will be working with Brown in order to explore some of these issues against benchmarks of other similar hospitals, at no cost to the Wingham hospital. She added this will be completed by the end of the month. The WDH Health Centre manage ment committee has been designed with Verna Steffler as the chairman. Comack said the terms of refer ence are drafted and the group is scheduled to meet today, May 10. The issues to be considered by the transfers and nursing costs to accom pany patients. Ongoing patient education activi ties and programs include diabetic education, high cholesterol and back education classes. OBSTETRICS Pietrek said 32 registered nurses from across midwestern Ontario have started an obstetrics course. The educational program will be on going for the next five weeks. “We are noticing a steady increase in normal deliveries here at the Wingham hospital,” she said. Pietrek noted that while the present course is basic, the hospital is look ing at offering a more advanced course in the future. Two RNs from Wingham also attended a two-day nursing leader ship training course in Stratford. There was no charge to the Wingham hospital. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 2000. PAGE 31. CLASSIFIED MARKETPLACE "Advertise Across Ontario or Across the Country" group are space allotment for poten tial new physicians, security of files and contents, inventory of existing equipment and future needs, envi ronmental planning, decoration and maintenance and other concerns that arise. According to the site administra tor, the review of the revised bylaws for the WDH has been complete with several issues still requiring clarification. Comack stated they are moving through the approval process for the WDH and joint executive committee operating plan. Chief of Medical Staff Dr. Marie Gear said there has been lots of dis cussion. Some hospitals are looking at a deficit budget. Dr. Gear noted if Wingham were to go with deficit budgeting, it would be looking at two options — reduce services or eliminate rehabil itation and obstetrics. The timetable has been revised due to the fact the Ministry of Health has extended its deadline to June 2. Final approval is expected in July. Steffler, chairman of the physician recruitment committee, said over 600 letters were sent to doctors in the Greater Toronto Area. She noted there was no real response, and the committee is not sure where to go next. George Underwood suggested offering a scholarship for students from the Wingham hospital catch ment area who are studying medi cine on the condition they return to Wingham. He said he felt the committee should at least take a look at this possibility. BUSINESS OPPS. COLLECT CASH! Coke, Pepsi, Frito Lay, Mars. Re-fill unique vendors in your area. F/T, P/T. No selling.
