April is Daffodil Month
"We're really confident that
we will beat cancer"
That’s what Dr. Robert Phillips, Executive Director of the National Cancer
Institute of Canada, the research affiliate of the Canadian Cancer Society, says
about the progress we have made in cancer research, thanks to the efforts of
thousands of Canadian Cancer Society volunteers.
Our campaign is once again being represented by Rae Ellen Hutley, an 18-year-old
cancer survivor. Rae Ellen was successfully treated for cancer when she was four
years old. After singing solo in the first Look What Daffodils Do campaign in 1992,
Rae Ellen has gone on to a promising career in musical theatre. Rae Ellen is proof
of "what daffodils do".Dr. Robert Phillips

Research is the key to beating cancer
We have seen a great increase in our knowledge of cancer. Research
supported by the Canadian Cancer Society has led to improved cancer
detection and treatments.
Gene Therapy - One of the exciting new treatments being explored
introduces normal genes back into cancer cells to correct the defective
genes. To efficiently enter a cell, the gene must be enclosed in the right
package. Viruses are able to enter cells and can be modified to hold the
gene. Once inside the cell, the gene used for therapy begins to affect the
cell. For example, the new gene may cause the cell to activate a self-
destruct mechanism found in normal cells and absent in tumour cells. The
gene may also cause the cell to produce an enzyme that makes the cell
more sensitive to destruction by a conventional drug. The possibilities of
gene therapy for cancer treatment are limitless.
Attacking a Cancer Cell's Blood Supply - A cancer tumour needs an ever
increasing supply of blood to survive and it ensures that it has this supply
be establishing its own network of blood vessels. Scientists are discovering
what drugs will block this process thus "starving" the tumour. This method,
called antiangiogenic therapy, does not attack the tumour directly but
would weaken the cancer tumour so that a small amount of radiation or
chemotherapy would destroy it. -
For these research efforts and others to continue, increasing our knowledge
of how cancer works, we need your help. About half of all the funds raised
by the Canadian Cancer Society support the best cancer research in
Canada. Help us do more.
