Ontario Division encourages people to eat more fruits and vegetables to help reduce their risk of developing cancer. Great Food Fast, the theme of National Nutrition Month in March 2000. focuses on quick and healthy food ideas for busy people. And what could be more healthy and quick to prepare than fruits and veg etables? The Canadian Cancer Society esti mates that 20 per cent of cancers could be prevented if every Canadian ate at least five servings of vegetables and fruit daily. The Canadian Cancer Society endorses Canada’s Guidelines for Healthy Eating, developed by Health Canada, which include these key points: • Enjoy a variety of foods. • Emphasize cereals, breads, other grain products, vegetables and fruits. • Choose lower fat dairy products, leaner meats and foods prepared with little or not fat. • Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight by enjoying regular physical activity and healthy eat ing. • Limit salt, alcohol ar.d caffeine. Step two of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Seven Steps to Health states: “Eat five to I.0 servings of vegetables and fruits a day. Choose high fibre, lower fat foods. If you drink alcohol, limit your intake to one or two drinks a day.” The Canadian Cancer Society also supports Eat Smart! Ontario’s Healthy Restaurant Program. When you see the Eat Smart symbol, you are entering a restaurant that offers a variety of healthier food choices, on the menu and by request; exception al standards in safe food handling, with staff certified by public health department; and more non-smoking seating. For the locations of Eat Smart! restaurants in Ontario, visit the Eat Smart! website at www.eats- mart.web.net Understanding the links between diet and the risk of developing can cer is growing as research progress es.
