Wingham Hospital board news Doctor’s death leaves professional void By Jim Brown Advance-Times The death of Dr. Jim McGregor left a large professional void at the Wingham District Hospital, accord ing to Dr. Marie Gear. She informed the March meeting of the Wingham District Hospital board that Dr. McGregor’s death cre ated four big holes which have to be filled. "The medical staff is trying to address the situation,” she stated. Dr. Gear noted all the doctors have managed to absorb his practice load. She added Dr, Sean Sleeth is filling in one day a week. Other areas affected by Dr. McGregor’s death are the nursing and retirement homes, the Gorrie Mennonite community and Wescast Industries Inc. Dr. Gear said the medical staff has tried to absorb the patients at the retirement and nursing homes. She indicated the medical staff will be meeting with the Mennonite commu nity in regards to their needs. The medical staff is working with Wescast in order to provide a replacement physician. “We need more physicians more than ever,” said Dr. Gear. Verna Steffler of the physician recruitment committee said they have been in contact u ith a doctor in Winnipeg who is interested in relo cating. She added there has been some additional interest from Queens University medical students. According to Steffler, the commit tee is considering another mailing to graduating students. With the med ical students graduating in June, the committee will have to do this quick ly. However, she indicated Head Hunters is prepared to try to attract people who are interested in relocat ing. Steffler told the board the commit tee needs more money if they are to bring people in. “We have to get the Bd. rejects hiring proposal By Jim Brown Advance-Times A proposal to hire a nurse practi tioner to help facilitate cancer care at Wingham and Clinton hospitals has been turned down by the province. However, Margret Comack, site administrator at Wingham and District Hospital and a vice president of the Huron-Perth Hospitals Partnership, said the hospitals now people on-site to have them know where they will be situated and have them tour the hospital,” she said. “If we can get them here, they may like us.” She said the committee would like to get people here during March, will look at ways to fund a nurse practitioner on their own. Using survey data from the London Regional Cancer Centre (LRCC), a plan for service will be developed for a nurse practitioner to support cancer care and provide a link with the LRCC. Late last month, the premier announced that 106 nurse practition ers would be hired to work in under serviced and northern communities “It’s pretty desperate right now,” said Steffler. “We have to move as quickly as possible.” She was uncertain if the second application for under-service desig nation has been sent in. The commit tee meets next week. of Ontario. Nurse practitioners are being considered as a way to help alleviate doctor shortages in commu nities, such as Wingham, now declared under-serviced by two physicians. In addition to Wingham-Clinton, the Huron-Perth group also had proposed that nurse practition ers be hired for Goderich and Exeter. That proposal also was turned down. • GOODS • SERVICES •TRADES » 1 POWER ®"0 a total, reliable fuel service • Ethanol Gasoline • Clear Diesel • Dyed Diesel • Furnace Oil BELGRAVE CO-OP AUBURN CO-OP \^357-2711 OR 1-800-267-2667____________ 526-7262 Large & Small Trucks fridgecarts - piano dollys- movlng blankets Complete Selection of Cars Our rates qualify for insurance replacement Passenger Vans full size or mini STRICKLANDS . 344 Huron Rd. 524-9381 \GODERICH 1-800-338-1 Clark & Son Lawn Maintenance • Custom Grass Cutting and Landscaping • Spring & Fall Clean-ups • Lawn Rolling • Core Aerating and much more Call Jeff for a free estimate \R.R. #3 Brussels 887-9668/ Frank Workman) Electric 20 years serving Brussels & area •Farm *Home •Commercial - COMPLETE MECHANICAL SERVICE - COMPUTERIZED TUNE-UPS - TIRES - BRAKES MUFFLERS - VEHICLE INSPECTION STATION DAN'S AUTO REPAIR A little exercise can Walking 3 km in 35 minutes can do winders for your health.
