Brussels squad has busy weekend
Novices lose WOAA bid
The Brussels Tykes had a busy
weekend when they participated in
the lucknow tournament Saturday
then travelled to Milverton for an
exhibition contest Sunday.
In spite of hard play by the entire
team, the hometown squad took the
first-of two games in Lucknow.
Great defence throughout the game
by Randy Zwep. Cole McLean,
Herbie Runstedler, Ryan Baker and
Ty Sebastian helped keep the squad
in the match. Jordan Roberts had a
great game, helping protect Nic
Gowing in net.
Gowing made several good saves
to end the first period with a score
less game. Morgan Deitner hit the
scoreboard first when she took a
pass from Matt Huether.
After Lucknow tied it up, Gowing
kept the tally at one each with a
great save before the second period
buzzer. Brendan Stretton put the
squad up by one when he got the
puck from Roberts
Lucknow took the score to 5-2
before Stretton hit the twine for
his second to finish Brussels’ scor
ing.
In their second game, Brussels
took on Ripley in a very close
match. Goals by Huether and
Runstedler, on a great slap shot, put
the team in a 2-2 tie with their oppo
nent. The winner was decided on a
shoot-out with Brussels coming up
on the short end of a 2-1 score. Ray
Huether netted the puck for
Brussels.
The offence was rejuvenated for
the Sunday game when they out-
powered the Milverton team. M.
Huether kicked off the scoring just a
minute and a half into the contest
when he picked up a pass in front of
the net and slid it in.
Defence by R. Huether,
Runstedler and Robert Cronin
stopped rushes from getting into the
Brussels zone. A shot from Chris
Becker in front was deflected to the
side as was a M. Huether attempt.
Sebastian was strong in net, push
ing away shots and smothering the
rebounds.
Deitner held her spot in front of
the opposition’s crease and was in
place to redirect a shot at 8:18. Less
than a minute later, Zwep took a
pass from Gowing and M. Huether
for his first netter of the season.
At 5:33, R. Huether picked up a
clearing shot from Roberts and got
it in from a shallow angle.
Stretton hit for the first of three at
1:34 when he flipped it over the
goalie’s shoulder. His second came
just before the buzzer as he took it
from his own blueline and put it in
on the back hand.
Sebastian started off the second
frame with a great save in close then
watched as his teammates raced to
the opposite end for a score.
Runstedler put in M. Huether’s
rebound.
Stretton’s hattrick came with the
assistance of R. Huether when he
passed the puck from behind the net
and Stretton poked it in.
Cronin topped off Brussels’ scor
ing when he batted in a rebound at
11:39.
Milverton broke Sebastian’s
shutout at 8:51.
Danny Donkers worked hard
along the boards to keep the play out
of his end and was taken out on a
break away. Gowing’s hustle
showed in his defence. Andrew
Watson and Zach Watson got
involved in battles for the puck,
poking it out of crowds to waiting
teammates.
Strong offence by the entire squad
helped keep the play in the
Milverton end for much of the
game.
Going into play last week, the
Blyth Novice Reps were down by
one game to Tiverton in their best-
of-five E-division WOAA semi
final.
On Feb. 29, the squad hit the ice
in Tiverton, notching the first goal
of the game late in the first.
Johnathon McDowell earned the
point, assisted by Roman
Sturzenegger.
The home team quickly tied the
match then watched Blyth's Tony
Bean close out the period with a
goal for the 2-1 lead.
Tiverton struck for two unan
swered goals in the second and was
up 5-2 before Curtis Robertson
bulged the twine in the third to end
