Council backs BBA proposal IN THE CLASSIFIEDS Lending a hand Blyth Public School student Justin Peters along with Rose Wood and Meagan Campbell (not pictured) helped serve the St. Patrick’s Day stew for the Dining Out program at Trinity Anglican Church in Blyth, last Friday. Joann MacDonald was just one of many who gathered for the outing. By Janice Becker Citizen staff Blyth businesses have received the full support of council in boosting awareness of the community. Bev Elliott of the Blyth Business Association attended the March 6 council session, seeking financial backing in welcoming a group of Rotary Club spouses to the village May 13. When Goderich hosts as many as 300 delegates for a Rotary Club con vention, day trips are being planned to communities such as Blyth and Bayfield. The Goderich club was seeking input from the communities about activities planned. Elliott said the BBA has suggested the spouses could arrive from Goderich around 11 a.m. for a tour of the theatre complex then settle in for a lunch at Memorial Hall. It is hoped each of the restaurants in Blyth could provide a portion of the meals. The afternoon would be filled with shopping Blyth’s main street. Bain ton’s and a bus ride to The Old Mill. Elliott asked if council would con sider sponsoring the meal. Though a specific number of arrivals will not be known until attendee forms are returned with convention registration, Elliott said there could be anywhere from 50 to 150 in the village. She also asked that the village pur chase pens inscribed with Discover the Magic of Blyth, ON to be used for the Rotary event. Women’s Day Out on April <8 and the Communities in Bloom competition in Edmonton in September. Council was told the cost of 600 pens would be $ 135. Councillor Rob Lawrie put forth a motion which would support the Rotary Club day and the purchase of pens at a cost of no more than $800. Elliott assured council the cost would be far less than that. A motion was passed to decline the invitation to join a joint venture to create a distribution company with other utilities in Huron and Perth County. Though there had been a sugges tion for interested municipalities to contribute $2,500 towards the for mation of the venture (10 utilities to cover the $25,000 cost), Coun cillor Murray Nesbitt said it would be like putting good money after bad if council would still list the utility for sale. While Councillor Rob Lawrie had first suggested going into the venture to see how it worked out, he too agreed that he believed it was futile because the provincial government has already talked of further amalgamation in the sector. Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart said Wingham council had earlier passed a motion to be part of the venture, but was also keeping options open if it fell through. “They are taking an active approach to contact neighbouring municipalities about amalgama tion,” he said. “They are looking to Bruce County.” Blyth councillors had expressed concern about the small size of a Huron-Perth utility with only 11,000 customers. Consultants had suggested a target number of 50,000. Stewart said there would be other small utilities in the area and the groups should work together not compete with each other for a larg er customer base. Reeve Mason Bailey noted that the potential sale of the Blyth utili ty would allow the village to put all the infrastructure in good shape before going into a large munici pality. “Blyth could get forgotten often.” Stewart was also instructed to prepare a request for proposals for the sale of the utility. < < Blyth Blyth euchre winners from Feb. 28 were: high lady, Dorothy Hyman; high man, Garner Nicholson; ladies’ lone hand, Alice Nicholson; men’s lone hand, Elliott Lapp; low lady, Janet Lawrie; low man, Clifford Coultes.
