Food advisor program seeks volunteers
The Community Food Advisor
Program of Huron and Perth is
looking for volunteers.
“Anyone interested in food and
working with people will enjoy this
program,” promises Sandra Kreis, a
community food advisor. “People
who volunteer to be community
food advisors learn all about food -
how to select healthy food, prepare,
preserve, and store it safely.”
After they complete a training
program, they work in the
community to share what they have
learned. An information meeting
about the program will be held on
Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mitchell
Town Hall, 169 St. David Street,
Mitchell. Details about how the
program works will be provided
and participants will have an
opportunity to meet with certified
community food advisors who
already volunteer in our
community.
The program was developed by
the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs. Locally, the program is
administered by a group of
agencies from Huron and Perth
Counties.
Volunteers receive 70 hours of
free training from fooo, nutrition
and food safety experts. After
successfully completing their
training, they become certified.
Trainees also have the option of
being certified in the Safe Food

Kreis attributes the success of the
program to the fact that community
food advisors are dedicated to
reaching out to people in their
communities. “They work with
children, adolescents, adults and
seniors in a variety of settings to
meet the needs of each particular
group.”
$1,000 worth of tools were stolen
Taken were a Skil jigsaw, Makita

some of the activities that the
community food advisors could get
involved in.
