The Citizen, 2000-03-01, Page 9S ports Atoms take the 5th to win playoff series ■ The Blyth Atom Bulldogs forced their consolation play-off series against Normanby to a fifth game when they earned a victory Feb. 21 at home. Jeffery Elliott had a superb game in the Bulldog cage, looking partic ularly sharp on Normanby’s #4’s breakaway chance. Opposition shooters became visibly frustrated as the game progressed. The lone Blyth goal was scored by Josh Albrechtas. Blake Hessel- wood passed the puck to Darcey Cook who feathered a pass to Albrechtas. He walked in alone from the point and blasted a shot past the bewildered Normanby net- minder. The excitement heated up with 2:27 to go in the game when Albrechtas was assessed a five- minute penalty for highsticking. The Bulldogs penalty-killers did an excellent job as the.Normanby attack was kept at bay. They were not given a chance to pull the goalie until there were just nine seconds remaining. Setting the tone for the final in the best-of-five series, Normanby returned to Blyth Feb. 27. A very spirited Bulldog team took to the ice. They grabbed the lead early and held on until the third. Albrechtas opened the scoring with a netter at 2:27 of the first. Hesselwood passed to John Bokhout for Blyth’s second before Normanby hit the scoreboard at 9:29 of the second. Cook and Bokhout to Hessel wood pulled Blyth to a 3-1 lead as the middle period ended. A charged up Normanby squad put the puck on. tying the game and forcing it into overtime. The visitors earned the win when they got one by Joel Salverda with 2:28 remaining. Elliott played a tremendous game in the first two periods with Salver da duplicating the effort when he took over for the third period and overtime. The fans were kept on the edge of their seats right to the finish of a great series. The Bulldogs take on Paisley Wednesday night in the final play off series. Offense hurts Tykes The offense for the Brussels Tykes was lacking on the weekend as they were soundly defeated by Clinton and Seaforth. The Saturday afternoon match in Clinton started well with Brendan Stretton hitting the twine early in the contest. The home team responded a few minutes later to tie it up. Matt Huether popped one in at 6:29 of the first, after several attempts on the agile goalie. Ray Huether, Zach Watson and Andrew Watson worked hard to keep the play in their opponents’ end. Clinton put in five more before Brussels responded with their third. Stretton stole the puck at their blue- line and went in alone with a flip shot over the goalie. Daniel Elliott made a great poke check to stop a rush, but the home team added two in the final minutes for the 8-3 win. Jordan Roberts was strong on defence, supporting goalie Nic Gowing during the busy game. Robert Cronin, Ty Sebastian, Morgan Deitner and Ryan Baker aided the defence by prevent break- Reps play Mitchell Brussels Atom Rep team played the Mitchell Rep team on Tuesday night, Feb. 22. Herbie Runstedler and Danny Donkers stopped shots by diving in front of the puck. Randy Zwep kept the puck in the zone by digging along the boards. The contest against Seaforth on Sunday was a good effort by the squad though they were unable to stop the offense or break through the defence. Cronin was kept extremely busy in net, stopping many shots in close and batting others away with his glove-hand. Good hustle by Gavin Bowers and breakaways by Stretton threat ened to prevent the shutout but it was not to be. Brussels was kept off the board in a high scoring game. volunteering with a person with Alzheimer Disease? • Would you like to increase your knowledge and understanding about Alzheimer Disease? • Would you enjoy participating in a public awareness campaign to educate others about this disease?
