Optimists make wish come true Gliding Tori Cardiff was one of several young skaters on the ice this past Saturday for the annual Brussels Skating Club Skate- 3-thon. (Ashley Gropp photo) By Janice Becker Citizen staff For one very special little girl, a fundraising effort by the Brussels Optimists will make her dream come true. Six-year-old Nicole suffers from severe Cerebral Palsy and through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Optimists will be sending Nicole, her parents and a nurse to Disney World. Chair of the fundraising event, Optimist Don Sholdice says the club decided to hold a dinner, dance, auc tion and draw in support of Make-A- Wish after learning more about the organization through an Optimists International function. “We thought it would be a great thing to do.” Set for April 8 at the BMG Community Centre, the evening will begin with a happy hour from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. At 7 p.m.. all those in attendance will have the opportunity to win cash prizes of $250, $150 and $100. The all-you-can-eat German meal will be catered by Tastefully Yours. Cousin Clem will entertain at 8:30 p.m. and Make-A-Wish Foundation representative Jackie Fischer will speak about the organization and how it works. “I have been involved in Make-A- Wish for four years and it is very rare for an Optimist club to do this for the foundation,” says Fischer. “Usually it is high schools.” Make-A-Wish, the largest not-for- profit foundation in the world, grants wishes to any child under the age of 18 diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, says Fischer. The foundation does not just ensure the opportunity for the child to fulfill a dream, but they do it in grand fashion. “We don’t just take them to Disney World. We give them a limo ride and anything else needed to make it spectacular.” While Disney World is requested by as many as 80 per cent of the chil dren, Fischer says they have had wishes for a trip to the set of Dawson’s Creek and Young and the Restless, the opportunity to meet sports heroes, go on golfing trips and get computers. Fischer says, “There is nothing more rewarding” than seeing the excitement on the faces of the chil dren who have received their wish. “It is the most amazing feeling. It is worth all the time in the world. When you see the kids light up, it is worth 1,000 words.” Having begun in Ontario 14 years ago with a single wish, the founda tion now tries to grant as many as 25 each year. The Brussels evening for Nicole will end with an auction and a 50s and 60s dance to a DJ. The club is looking for donated items for the auction. All proceeds from the event will go to Make-A- Wish with the Optimists ensuring Nicole visits Disney World. The average cost of a wish is $5,000, based on a family of four travelling to Disney World for eight days and seven nights. Entire fami lies are encouraged to be part of the wish. The $20 per person tickets can be purchased through any Brussels Optimist member. Threat at school On Feb. 21, St. James Separate School in Seaforth received a taped telephone message threatening the safety of the occupants of the school. School officials dismissed the stu dents for the remainder of the day to ensure the safety of the students. It was expected the students would return for regular classes Tuesday. The OPP are investigating this incident.
