Blyth Midgets WOAA champs
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs
captured their second WOAA
championship in three years,
sweeping Normanby in three
games.
Feb. 14, Blyth opened the series
on home ice. Blyth got the only
marker in the first period on a fine
solo effort by Scott Austin. The
Bulldogs broke the game open in
the second frame with goals by Joel
Arthur, Craig Marks and Austin.
Normanby scored on a
powerplay late in the period
making the score 4-1.
Marks and Arthur scored again in
Novices
lead
Blyth Novices lead a best of five
series against Belmore by two
games.
On Feb. 16 Blyth hosted a low-
scoring contest. Scoreless in the
first, Belmore finally got to Blyth
goalie Anthony Peters late in the
second to get on the board.
Blyth held them back in the final
period, however, while scoring two
of their own for the win. Johnathon
McDowell and Roman Sturzeneg
ger scored for Blyth.
Assists went to Sturzenegger and
Watkins.
Game two in Belmore Feb. 20
had more action with Blyth edging
the hosts 5-4.
It took until the final minute of
the first before any goals were
scored, then each team managed
one. Blyth’s Tony Bean bulged the
twine 20 seconds after Belmore
took a one-point lead.
Belmore jumped ahead in the
second only to have Johnathon
McDowell come in unassisted to tie
it up at two. Goals by Curtis
Robertson and Brett Courtney gave
Blyth a solid lead before the
buzzer. Derek Youngblut, Robert
son and Sturzenegger got the
assists.
Belmore narrowed the gap early
in the third, then Youngblut tallied
another with McDowell getting the
assist. Belmore got within one just
under two minutes of play left, but
couldn’t bring it any closer.
the third as the Bulldogs coasted to
a 6-1 win.
Dean Wilson and Travis
Campbell guarded the net for
Blyth. Tyler Stewart chipped in
three assists with singles going to
Austin, Arthur, Bryce Toll, Nathan
Shannon and Marks.
The Bulldogs travelled to Ayton
on Feb. 17. Normanby opened the
scoring four minutes into the game
but a goal by Arthur tied the game
after one frame. The teams each
scored twice in the second period to
deadlock the game at three. Austin
and Marks tallied the Blyth goals.
Again Normanby jumped into the
lead with a goal early in the third.
That goal stood up until Matt
