B elgrave Residents play euchre, shoot Compiled by Linda Campbell Phone 357-2188 UCW talks of light The regular meeting of the Evening Unit of Belgrave United Church met Tuesday evening at the home of Mabel Wheeler with 13 present. Barbara Anderson conducted the meeting. She thanked Mabel for hosting, then gave a reading by Hans Christian Anderson. Muriel Coultes conducted a epiphany worship service. Members each lit a chosen candle from a candle display. Donna Shaw read Luke 2: 22-38. Prayer was followed by hymns. As each member put out her candle she said how she could bring a little light to someone in need. Jan. 27 is the UCW general meeting at the church with potluck at 6:30 p.m. Barbara Anderson discussed the Jubilee Celebration for her program. In Leviticus 25 mention is made at the Jubilee. Every 50 years debts are to be forgiven and a new beginning made. Governments are discussing pardoning debts of Third World countries and allowing a new beginning. Laura Johnston read a related story. Other quotations were read by Mabel Wheeler, Irene Lamont, Sheila Nixon and Muriel Coultes, who also had a contest. After the benediction and grace Lois Anderson and Jane Grasby served a delicious lunch. Rev. Lackey gives sermon Bernice Higgins and Thelma Pletch greeted worshippers to Knox United Church communion on Sunday, Jan. 9. The guest minister, Rev. Neil Lackey, welcomed the congregation. The senior choir sang We Are So Blessed, accompanied by Elizabeth Procter. The Old Testament reading was from Genesis l: l-5 and the Gospel reading from Mark l: 4-11. Children’s story was based on How God Leads Us. The sermon was entitled The Leading. “How is God Leading You and how are you leading others”. Rev. Lackey asked. Becky Logan and Ross Higgins took up the offering. I. Mason hosts WMS On Monday the WMS held its meeting at the home of Irma Mason. Alice Nicholson opened with prayer. Ivy Cloakey read scripture from Romans. Margaret Siertsema gave the secretary report and Ivy Cloakey the treasurer’s report. Twenty-four sick and shut-in visits were recorded. Roll call was answered by a story or poem on the New Year. It was decided to gather some useful articles for the women’s shelter. Alice read an account of a Crossroads volunteer who went to South Africa and Malawi to work in clinics with the poor women and children who come for help. They sometimes had as many as 120 in a day. Celebrity auctioneers for the gala include Ken Knox and Roy Carver, with AALP graduate Karen Scott and her husband Graham rounding out the team. “The Dream Auction is a wonderful showcase of Ontario’s agricultural spirit and enthusiasm,” remarks Jennifer Schroter, Class 7 graduate and co-chair of the auction committee. “It’s a fun way to support the new leaders in our industry as they begin their intensive two year leadership program with AALP.” The Dream Auction is being hosted in the OMAFRA Building foyer, I Stone Rd. W., Guelph. Tickets are $35 per person and are limited. Order tickets or donate items by contacting the AALP office at 519-826-4204. Winners were: high lady, Lois Chamney; second high lady, Mary Taylor; lone hands, Jean Pattison; low lady, Irene Lamont; high man, Gordon Bosman; second high man, Eleanor Newans; lone hands, Stuart Chamney; low man, Garner Nicholson. The next euchre is Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. M. Coultes attends Westskate Muriel Coultes attended the COS Westskate 2000 in the Drayton Community Centre this past weekend where the Matheson family were taking part. Lisa received Gold in the Jr. Bronze Elements; Bronze in the Sr. Silver Shadow Dance with her partner Lindsey Berlett; and Silver in the Sr. Silver Solo Dance. Laura received Gold for her Preliminary Elements; Silver in the Jr. Bronze solo dance; Gold with hen partner Kayla Linstead in the Jr. Bronze Shadow Dance and fifth in the Preliminary Free Skate. Janice and Laura skated the Family Dance Canasta and received the Bronze. The Wallace Figure Skating Club took home the second place trophy for the club points in two days of skating. There were over 15 clubs participating. Moms meet Mabel’s Moms met for their first meeting of 2000 last Wednesday. Those who attended were: Crystal Agombar, Zachary, Nicholas and Dustin Pennington; Karen Rundle, Holly and Emily; Tracey Brohm and Liam; Donna Raynard, Curtis and Craig; Lila Procter and Jessica; Kim Higgins, Ashley, Shelby and Jarod Logan. Their topic was Resolutions. Sincere sympathy is extended from the community to Gordon and Louise Bosman in the passing away of Gordon’s brother Harold. May thoughts and prayers be with them in their time of sorrow.
