UCW talks of light
The regular meeting of the
Evening Unit of Belgrave United
Church met Tuesday evening at the
home of Mabel Wheeler with 13
present. Barbara Anderson
conducted the meeting. She
thanked Mabel for hosting, then
gave a reading by Hans Christian
Anderson.
Muriel Coultes conducted a
epiphany worship service.
Members each lit a chosen candle
from a candle display.
Donna Shaw read Luke 2: 22-38.
Prayer was followed by hymns.
As each member put out her
candle she said how she could
bring a little light to someone in
need.
Jan. 27 is the UCW general
meeting at the church with potluck
at 6:30 p.m.
Barbara Anderson discussed the
Jubilee Celebration for her
program.
In Leviticus 25 mention is made
at the Jubilee. Every 50 years debts
are to be forgiven and a new
beginning made. Governments are
discussing pardoning debts of
Third World countries and allowing
a new beginning.
Laura Johnston read a related
story.
Other quotations were read by
Mabel Wheeler, Irene Lamont,
Sheila Nixon and Muriel Coultes,
who also had a contest.
After the benediction and grace
Lois Anderson and Jane Grasby
served a delicious lunch.
Rev. Lackey gives sermon
Bernice Higgins and Thelma
Pletch greeted worshippers to Knox
United Church communion on
Sunday, Jan. 9.
The guest minister, Rev. Neil
Lackey, welcomed the
congregation.
The senior choir sang We Are So
Blessed, accompanied by Elizabeth
Procter.
The Old Testament reading was
from Genesis l: l-5 and the Gospel
reading from Mark l: 4-11.
Children’s story was based on
How God Leads Us.
The sermon was entitled The
Leading. “How is God Leading
You and how are you leading
others”. Rev. Lackey asked.
Becky Logan and Ross Higgins
took up the offering.
I. Mason hosts WMS
On Monday the WMS held its
meeting at the home of Irma
Mason.
Alice Nicholson opened with
prayer. Ivy Cloakey read scripture
from Romans.
Margaret Siertsema gave the
secretary report and Ivy Cloakey
the treasurer’s report.
Twenty-four sick and shut-in
visits were recorded. Roll call was
answered by a story or poem on the
New Year.
It was decided to gather some
useful articles for the women’s
shelter.
Alice read an account of a
Crossroads volunteer who went to
South Africa and Malawi to work
in clinics with the poor women and
children who come for help. They
sometimes had as many as 120 in a
day.
