Playground equipment gone
The first regular meeting of 2000
for the BMG Rec Board was held
Jan. 12 with the following
appointments being made by their
respective municipalities for the
new term: Village of Brussels -
Mary Stretton (Council), Abi
Corbett, George Langlois, Brian
Deitner; Twp. of Grey - Alvin
McLellan (Council), Mervyn
Bauer, Steve Knight, Darwin
Ducharme; Twp. of Morris - Edna
McLellan (Council), Mary Bernard,
Allan Krotz. Alvin McLellan was
acclaimed chairman. George
Langlois is Vice-Chairman by
acclamation.
Joe Seili, president of the
Brussels Optimist Club, informed
the board that the club will make a
$5,000 donation to the board for
the purchase of a new sound system
for the BM&G Arena. The only
condition is that the various service
clubs who use the system have an
input to the type of system that is
purchased.
Arena Manager Murray McArter
was instructed to obtain some
prices for a new system.
The member contacts for each
designated community organization

The Board authorized McArter to
renew the contract for the elevator
with OTIS.
He indicated that a contract
should be drawn up this year for
the company awarded the job of
opening the pool for the season.
McLellan said that one or two
members of the Lions Club should
be appointed to the Pool
Committee for 2000. The Pool
Committee will be formed at the
February meeting of the board.
McLellan asked McArter if the
net on the backstop at the ball park
could be taken down or rolled back
because the weight of the snow on
it is causing the poles to bend.
The Valentine’s Dance is to be
held in partnership with the
Brussels Optimist Club on Feb. 12.
The dates for the Christmas
dances and Halloween dance will
be discussed at the February
meeting.
Prices for the hall, kitchen and
ice rentals were reviews. It was
moved by Corbett that the
following changes be incorporated
into the 2000 Brussels Morris and
Grey Community Centre price list:
dishwasher user fee per plate of 10
cents be omitted, primetime ice
rental per hour $75 plus GST and a
new fee of $5 per child be charged
if children want to rent the ice
when it’s not being used during
non-primetime hours.
Bauer was asked to discuss the
problem with the ice rental rates for
the Curling Club with the curling
club members at their next meeting.
The budget committee will meet at
the Grey Twp. Municipal Office on
Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.

In December several pieces of
old playground equipment (slides
and trapeze apparatus, sand tires) at
Grey Central Public School were
condemned by the playground
review and removed by the board.
Replacement of these items with a
new sand box on the primary
playground are being investigated.
Students and staff wish Miss
Harrison the best as she begins her
new position at Turnberry Public
School as Grade 5/6 teacher. They
welcome Mrs. Goodall back to the
Grade 1 class for the mornings and
Miss Burkholder for the afternoons.
The school is again offering the
Grey Central Ski Trip which is
scheduled to run on Feb. 24.
Until the March Spring break, the
primary students (Grades JK-4) are
travelling to the Brussels arena for
skating. For your children’s safety,
it is recommended they wear a

New teacher at school
East Wawanosh School
welcomes Mrs.C. McGregor who is
teaching kindergarten Class A.
Students and staff hope she enjoys
her time with them.
The classrooms are bustling with
activity as students start to get
ready for speeches which will be
started in late January. Resources
such as texts, encyclopedia and the
Internet are being used.
Miss Schaefer’s Grade 5/6 class
has started the New Year by
studying the systems of the body in
science, doing comprehension
sheets in language and playing
hockey in physical education.
The Grade 5 class is working on
division and the Grade 6 class is
mastering perimeter, area and
volume.
Down the hall, Mr.Lobb's class
has just finished a unit on soil
erosion and the many projects
displayed in Room 8 help to
explain the problems and solutions
to this type of erosion.
The Grade 7/8s are looking
forward to a trip to Tech 21 in
Listowel on Jan. 24 and to the
annual ski trip to Talisman on Jan.

CSA approved hockey helmet,
have skates that fit properly and
that they wear appropriate clothing.
Skates must be properly transported
with skate guards.
With Grade 9 around the comer,
. the surrounding secondary schools
will be setting up visits for Grey’s
Grade 8 students.
A representative from Listowel
District Secondary School will be
visiting the Grade 8s at Grey
Central Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 9 a.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 1 the Grade 8s are
invited to visit LDSS for the
morning. Parents of Grade 8
students are invited to LDSS
Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.

Secondary School Program.
F.E. Madill Secondary School
Student/Parent Night was Monday,
Jan. 17. Registrations are due Jan.

Seaforth District Secondary
School visited Wednesday, Jan. 19.
Grade 8s have just completed a
drama unit culminating with the
Christmas concert play Scrooge
and Friends.
Most of the class was involved,
save for a few hockey players, and
the feedback from the students is
that they really enjoyed the
experience.
They are involved with fractions
in math this month and are adding,
subtracting, multiplying and
dividing them - sort of refreshing
and reminding ourselves of
material past learned.
Language Arts finds them
finishing the novel Cowboys Don’t
Cry by Marilyn Halvorsen as well
as the required compositions,
spelling pages and grammar
sessions with adjective and adverb
phrases.
Confederation of Canada is
almost accomplished in Grade8
history and Grade 7 is learning
about the early indigenous people
of North America.
In science, cells and kinds of
organs and systems have been the
focus and geography climagraphs
of Canadian and world cities have
been accomplished.
