The Citizen, 2000-01-19, Page 16PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2000. Ont. launches plan to address Alzheimer challenges By Alexandra Beasse January is Alzheimer Awareness Month. The Ontario government has launched a province-wide comprehensive plan to address the many challenges presented by Alzheimer’s disease. This plan includes: increasing public aware ness through education; training for physicians and others working with the person with Alzheimer’s disease; development of respite services and other supports for caregivers; and the development of directives of care. Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal result of the aging process. It is a progressive, degenerative brain disease which results in impaired memory, thinking and behaviour. Alzheimer’s will affect the roles and responsibilities of the family members. There are many ways to lend support to the families of the person with Alzheimer disease. 1. Keep in Touch 2. Do little things - they mean a lot 3. Give the caregiver a break 4. Help with a specific task 5. Become informed 6. Provide a change of scenery 7. Leam to listen 8. Take care of the caregiver 9. Remember all family members 10. Get involved For more information, contact the Alzheimer Society of Huron County at 482-1482 or 1-800-561- 5012. Bonspiel raises funds for H&S RUBY STEISS Ruby (Cleaver) Steiss of RR2, Brussels, passed away at Listowel Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000. She was in her 95th year. Ruby Steiss did a lot of living. Blessed with health of mind and body, she lived a life full of love, faith, hospitality, and charity. Ruby loved sharing a good story and a joke and kept a collection of stories and jokes to share for “smiles” at the Women’s Institute meetings. She always enjoyed a good visit from friends and family, which often included a game of cards, a cup of tea or coffee and some of her baked goodies. Some folks knew Ruby as the “Egg Lady” from her Fridays spent distributing eggs and visiting uptown. She believed in working hard and doing a job well and this work ethic extended into every area of her life. Ruby will be sadly missed by her children Winnifred Mann and her husband Charles of RR2, Listowel, Eileen Mann of RR1, Listowel, Jean Stiles and her husband Gordon of Stratford, and Stewart Steiss and his wife Madelene of RR2, Brussels. She was also loved by her 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Ruby was predeceased by her brothers Fred, Jordan, Earl and John and son-in-law Harry Mann. Friends were received by the fam ily from 2 - 4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, Brussels, where the funeral service was conducted on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cathrine Campbell of Melville Presbyterian Church officiating. A scripture passage was read by Mrs. Helen Elliott. Carrying floral tributes were granddaughters Donelda Stiles, Sharon Pharazon and Barbara Moore with Leanne Armstrong. Pallbearers were grandchildren Allan Mann, John Mann, Robert Steiss, Steven Steiss, Sandra Smith, and Cheryl Yost. Spring interment to follow in Cranbrook Cemetery.
