Local hockey supporter wins big
There were a lot of smiles to go around last week when John Wharton and his wife, Agnes,
of RR3, Blyth, were handed the keys to their red 2000 Chevy Z71 pickup, the grand prize in
the Blyth Bulldogs Minor Hockey League fundraising campaign. Wharton said he bought the
ticket for a completely unselfish reason - just to support hockey.

The first meeting of the Blyth
Dining Program this year was held
on Jan. 7. Thirty-six people
enjoyed a delicious meal of ham
and scalloped potatoes with all the
fixings, thanks to the terrific cook
and volunteers!
Special thanks to Sr. Const. Don
Shropshall who presented “Winter
Driving Part I” which was very
informative. All are looking
forward to hearing Part II when he
returns next month on Feb. 4.
Lucky winner of the door prize
was Hermina Dyk. The 50/50 draw
was won by Effie McCall.
Congratulations!

The first significant snowfall of
the season, which arrived just
before the new year, resulted in
considerable discussion at the Jan.
4 session of Blyth council.
Councillor Murray Nesbitt asked
why snow was removed from
Queen Street after 7 a.m. on the
morning of Dec. 29 when the snow
removal contract had stated it was
to be completed prior to that time.
Councillor Doug Scrimgeour said
Radfords had been set up to begin
snow removal at midnight, but had
not been contacted until the morn
ing.
Nesbitt also questioned why
Council
snow had been removed south of
King Street and north of Drum
mond Street, noting that although it
had been done in the past that was
not a reason to continue the prac
tice.
Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart
said council sets policy and staff
completes the task accordingly. If
council wished to change the pro
cedure, the staff would comply, he
said.
In response to a question from
Nesbitt regarding the use of the
three-yard bucket instead of the
tendered four-yard bucket, Scrim
geour said the four-yard bucket was
cumbersome and the village was
being billed accordingly when the
three-yard bucket was used.
