Portion of Sacred Heart school flooded
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen
Some students at Sacred Heart
Catholic elementary school in
Wingham may find themselves
gathering outside their regular
classroom — perhaps in the school’s
library — when the school year
resumes next week.
That's because an unexpected
downpour in mid-August caught
roofing contractors off guard, and
flooded a portion of the school.
Trustees of the Huron-Perth
Catholic District School Board were
informed of the mishap at a regular
meeting Monday, Aug. 25.
Management superintendent Gerry
Thuss explained that three
Health unit issues
reminder that
classrooms and a hallway were
damaged by the downpour “about
two weeks ago,” and that one
particular classroom will remain out
of commission when students return
to school Sept. 2.
According to Thuss, the downpour
occurred immediately after
contractors had pulled up a portion
of the school’s roof as part of a total
replacement of the surface. As a
result of the soaking and to prevent
the build-up of potentially dangerous
mould, wet drywall had to be
removed to allow the tongue-and-
groove ceiling to dry out.
In two classrooms and the
hallway, moisture tests have since
concluded that sufficient drying has
taken place to replace the drywall.
Thuss says those rooms will be
ready for Sept. 2. That’s not the case
in the third classroom, however, and
he says the school’s principal now
must decide where, else within the
building to temporarily facilitate the
students who would normally use
that space.
The management superintendent
wouldn’t offer any comment about
the possible cost of the clean-up,
except to say the board hasn’t yet
paid for the roofing work. “Right
now, the contractor is in the school
doing all the work necessary to make
it right.”
bats may be rabid
This is the time of year when bats
are most common. Local public
health inspectors remind residents
that bats may have rabies and that
they should seek medical advice if
they come into contact with a bait.
"Rabies is a serious disease
caused by a virus that when left
untreated is fatal to humans,” says
Paul Dawson, Public Health
Inspector with Huron County Health
Unit's Healthy Environment Team.
Dawson explains that people may
become infected with rabies when
bitten by a rabid bat or when a rabid
bat's saliva comes into contact with
broken skin or moist tissues of the
mouth, nose or eyes. If either type
of contact occurs, the area should be
washed thoroughly and medical
advice should be sought
immediately.
People are also considered to be at
risk when one of the following
occurs:
- a bat lands on a person
- a sleeping person awakes and
finds a bat tn the room or
- a bat is found in the room of an
unattended child or person
unable to report wTiether they had
direct contact with the bat.
These are considered exposures
because bats have sharp needle-like
teeth that may cause a relatively
painless bite that leaves no obvious
marks.
People cannot get rabies just from
seeing a bat fly nearby or in an attic.
In addition, people cannot get rabies
from having contact with bat guano
(feces), blood, or urine, or from
touching a bat on its fur.
Whenever possible, the bat should
be safely captured and the health
unit should be notified. The health
unit will make arrangements to
submit the bat for rabies testing. If a
bat is found to be rabid or a bat is not
available for testing, exposed
persons will be advised to be
vaccinated against rabies.
Last year in Huron County there
were 17 reported bat exposures. If
you have been exposed to a bat or
require more information about
rabies, contact the Health Unit at
482-3416 ext. 246, or 1-877-837-
6143 if calling long distance. If you
are reporting a bat exposure and are
calling after business hours, dial
646-0819.
