Two more crows have tested
positive for West Nile virus in Perth
County, one in Mitchell (their second
this summer), and one in Milverton
(their first).
Additionally, a new positive crow
has been found close to the border of
Middlesex County and Blanshard
Twp.
“These latest positive tests are
further proof that West Nile virus is
active throughout Perth County, and
residents need to take precautions”
says public health manger Tim
Cronsberry.
Earlier this month, the Perth
District Health Unit stepped up
surveillance activities in West
Perth, Perth East, and North
Perth. “Adult mosquitoes are
being trapped in Mitchell and
Listowel, and Milverton is
being mapped for mosquito breeding
sites” said Cronsberry. “These
activities will give us important
information regarding the need for
future mosquito control activities,”
he adds.
Residents are encouraged to
continue reporting sightings of dead
crows, but the Perth District Health
Unit will no longer be getting crows
tested. The Guelph laboratory has
reached full capacity and is now
focusing on areas where West Nile
virus has not yet been found.
This is the time of year when
human cases of WNv are more likely
to be seen. The health unit is urging
all residents of Perth County to take
the following steps when mosquitoes
are active:
* wear light-coloured clothing,
long-sleeved shirts, pants and
socks
* use an insect repellent
containing DEET when outdoors.
Be sure to follow the directions
for its use. especially for children.
Other important steps:
* prevent mosquito-breeding sites
by getting nd of standing water
once a week in places like bird
baths, old tires and children’s toys
* repair any doors or window
screens where mosquitoes could
enter the home.
While there have been no cases of
WNv infection in people in Perth
County this year, the risk exists.
People over the age of 50 are more at
risk of developing encephalitis
(swelling of the brain) from WNv;
however, most people who become
infected with the virus will have no
symptoms.
As of today, at least 15 probable or
confirmed human cases of WNv
have been diagnosed in Canada.
